| verygary's Full Review: NAD C160 Amplifier |
I have been in quest of a pre-amp for some time to compliment my Mcintosh MC2100 amplifier. So, with amp and my Dynaco A25's in tow, I ventured to Audio Alternatives in Lilburn, GA to audition a Conrad Johnson Sonographe pre. The CJ had a nice sound stage and sounded very good with my 2100. I listened to a wide genre of music and was very pleased with the sound. Being a Mcintosh fan and a fan of vintage equipment, I decided to give a listen to a Mcintosh C32. What a disappointment! No stage depth along with mushy mid and bass when compared flat with the CJ. I could get to the sound by playing with the equalizer controls, but there was still only one dimension to the sound. On a recommendation by Mike (the sales rep), we hooked up NAD's C160 pre-amp.I was not hesitant, having owned the legendary 3020 series 20 back in the seventies. I knew at that time NAD gave great value for the money, but I had not auditioned NAD in years. Well, guess what? They still rock! I listened for about 2 minutes and my mind was made up. There were about 2 extra layers of depth along with tight, punchy bass and sweet mids and highs. Now that I have burned-in this jewel, I have re-discovered why I used to spend hours listening to music! You can't go wrong with this fantastic pre-amp. I paid full retail which I have never done in my life-for anything. Just ask my wife!
