| Redall's Full Review: Philips CDR770 CD Recorder |
This entry-level CD recorder's price is what got me to buy it. Although the sound is good, it is very temperamental. In fact, the first one I bought had to be returned for a new one due to errors it made while recording. The 770 does not always recognize CDs when inserted (even pre-recorded ones), so often I have to open and close the drawer several times before it begins to play. It does not readily accept some brands of blank CD-Rs, notably Memorex.
Sometimes it stops recording in the middle of a song, thus rendering the disc useless and the time spent recording it wasted.
When recording live music digitally from MiniDisc, it records all tracks as one long song. Though this could be the fault of the MD, I'd place my bet on the Philips. Also, there is no way to begin recording from the remote.
It is one of the most inexpensive recorders for the stereo, and if you can put up with its shortcomings, it can make good recordings--as all others I'm sure can do.
Please note that I have no experience with other CD recorders, so some of the flaws I've found in this model might be inherent in CD recorders generally.
