| Geoff_D's Full Review: Sony CDP-CE335 5-Disc CD Changer |
If you're looking for a basic CD player and have no idea where to start, think about buying Sony's CDP-CD335. After receiving it as a graduation present and using it for over a month, I've been enjoying it every day all the more.
There's nothing special about this player, really -- but that's the beauty of it. The controls are all pretty self explanatory -- you eject it and the CD wheel pops open, and you press Disc Skip to exchange the CDs in the player. With 5 total discs, you usually have a pretty good selection and when I load it up every few days, I usually don't have to change the CDs much. While a little slower than the cartridge insert method I've seen with some CD players, the spinning wheel method is always attractive, and it also reduces the overall wear on the CDs. One disadvantage to the 5 CD wheel, however, is that the player must be a long and wide -- about 1'10" x 1'6".
The controls aren't anything special, though it does have the handy feature of allowing a shuffle play with track memory so it won't play the same random song twice in one sitting, and the ability to shuffle through just one disc or all of them. It also has a handy lever you can use to skip through tracks quickly -- no more punching buttons 15 times to get to a track at the end of the CD. You just spin the wheel until the track number you want lights up on the LCD screen and let it play.
Though I haven't gotten to play with it much, for those who like to record mixes to tape, it does have a fader and a timed fader -- meaning you can fade out a song in a professional manner, fade it right back in, or fade it down just enough to talk over it a bit. Probably not so handy if you're not putting anything to tape, but a neat feature to have, overall.
Finally, it comes with a remote. One word: useless! Just like the remote for my car stereo, I rarely ever use this (though the car stereo one I -never- use). It's pretty much a novelty, and it does have quite a number of buttons, but unless you're too lazy to walk over to your system, I doubt you'll end up using this much.
An average CD player, an average price, and overall, a good deal. I'm very satisfied with what I have, and for the typical music lover, much more isn't going to be necessary -- the sound quality on the CDP-CD335 is as clear as any, and the features leave nothing to be desired. A good buy.
