| lfiction's Full Review: Sony CDP-CE525 |
I felt I had to write this review because my experiences with this unit were radically different from what has been previously written.
I have owned this model of CD Changer for several years. During that time, it has never given me a minute's worth of trouble.
I spend a lot of time nosing around at used CD stores, consequently I bring home a lot of used CDs, which tend to be scratched and dirty. I have never brought home a CD that this player had any problems with, except one. That CD had been through the wash, and the dye from the top had bled through to the bottom, making it unplayable (or so I thought). I was somewhat leery when I brought it home, because I'd heard tales of CDs like this one ruining CD players permanently. But curiosity got the better of me, and I popped it in. Imagine my amazement when the CDP CE525 actually played the dyed disc! It sounded pretty funky, granted, but I was impressed that the unit played it all, and didn't just cough, gasp and die like so many others I've seen.
Another nice feature this player has is CD-TEXT. CD-TEXT never really caught on in the commercial market, but most CD burning software I've seen (Nero, Roxio, etc) supports it, so you can burn your own mix CDs or whatever, and this CD player will display the title of every track it plays. Incidentally, I have never had a problem with CD-Rs in this player either, and I've used all kinds.
It also has an optical out, if you have a more modern HiFi receiver that has optical inputs.
All in all, I have no complaints whatsoever about this unit. Over the years, I have taken care of it, and it has taken care of me. I have no reason to believe that it won't last another 4 or 5 years.
The only drawback this product has is simply this: in a world of DVD/DVD AUDIO/(S)VCD/MP3/CD-RW or even SACD players, this one only plays CDs, CD-Rs, and probably CD-RWs (never tried). MP3s are convenient because you can store more songs on a disc, DVD AUDIO and SACD support higher sampling size and rate, and multiple audio channels. If this sounds like gibberish to you, you probably don't need these new formats.
