| Cosine's Full Review: Sony CDP-CE525 |
I didn't actually own this cd player, my roommate did, and in a collection of head to head tests we did this product revealed it's weaknesses pretty quickly. First off the mechanism is slow in every way, slow to change disks, slow to respond to commands and slow to open and close. It may not have been fair that the player we were tesing it against (a Pioneer) was a more upmarket one but even still the differences were shocking.
Because most cd players sound very much alike I won't comment on the sound, they both sounded fine to me. The problems I had were with the build quality and the performance of the internal components. Several issues of concern were:
1. Most of the Sony is built out of pretty cheap looking and cheap feeling plastics.
2. The remote had to be aimed pretty much right at the machine to work.
3. Even a moderate smack to the top or sides caused disc skip.
However the most revealing incident happened when we tested the two players ability to track through damaged discs. The Pioneer unit was able to play through an amazing amount of scratches and dust without skipping or sounding off, while even a minor scratch was enough to stop the Sony from playing at all.
We confirmed this most convincingly with a Garth Brooks (don't ask) cd which was moderately damaged, the Pioneer took no notice of the damage and played as if it were a new disk while the Sony wouldn't even recognize that there was a disk loaded.
Although I seem to trash Sony in several of my reviews I do not feel this shows any bias, there are lots of Sony products (TV's, VCR's, HandyCam's) where Sony is absolutely the number one choice for me, there are just some other products (stereo components) where their quality seems much more suspect.
