| cbn458's Full Review: Sony CDP-XE500 CD Player |
The Sony CDP-XE500, as I have said above, is an incredible value. Many of its features lend themselves well to making the XE500 perfect for compilations, as well as for listening.
The XE500 is extremely tolerant of CDs that are scratched. If you are like me, and keep your CDs in piles all over your desk, this feature alone will make you glad that you bought the XE500. I've played CDs that have skipped on my computer and discman on the XE500, and they've sounded perfect!
The XE500 also has a peak search function which allows you to find the loudest bit in any record and then play it again and again. This allows you to set the recording levels to whatever you like, and thus make professional sounding compilations with consistent volume.
Although these features make life easier, the XE500's most stellar capabilities lie in its superior sound. The midrange especially is smooth and crisp. I wouldn't have thought that CD players influenced the overall sound of a component system much, but I've learned from experience. For the longest time I was simply using a discman hooked up to my receiver. What a difference getting the XE500 has made. I can actually hear new instruments in a lot of my discs, in everything from Mahler to Pink Floyd.
All in all, this is the ideal player to get, so long as you don't mind spending under $150 for great sounding audio.
