| scarphace's Full Review: Sony MDS-JE440 Mini Disc Player |
As more and more MiniDisk players flood the market it is becoming increasingly harder to find quality products. The MDS-JE440 is one of the best player that you can get for a pretty reasonable price. Although it doesn't have all of the latest features it can hold it's own ground.
The MDS-JE440
The MDS-JE440 is pretty slim, as home audio components go. It's only about 1.5' x 1' x 3" and it weighs around than 5 pounds. The large screen on the from allows for you to easily see what your doing when editing you MiniDisks. It has many of the MiniDisk editing features that the top of the line players have, but not all. One of the draw backs are it's limited inputs and outputs.
Features
Track Recording / Rerecording - The best feature of MiniDisks are their ability to be recorded and rerecorded. Thank god they're recordable cause, although some artists do sell prerecorded MiniDisks, it's harder to find one than it is to find a Trekies who's lost their virginity. Go figure the odds of that. The MDS-JE440 allows you to do both with ease. Well that is record and rerecord, not the Trekies part though, keep looking. Unfortunately the record and rerecord speed is 1 to 1 with the source that you are recording from. This unit doest allow high speed dubbing.
Recording Sources - The MDS-JE440 allows for recording from any source: Cds, Portable CD Players, Tapes, Records, Radio, MP3 Players, even Computers. Some of these sources you will need a few extra cables for, but it is possible. The MDS-JE440 comes with 2 analog cables and a digital to allow for digital recordings from other digital inputs.
Track Title Editing - For every song that you record you can give it a name. You can also name the whole MiniDisk. If you get tired of your old name then feel free to rename your dong.
Track Erasing - MiniDisks solve one of the worst problems that one comes across when burning a mix CD. You get your favorite songs all together burn 'em and then a even better song comes along that you wish you could put on your CD, but you don't have the room, and you can erase a song. MiniDisks allow for tracks to be erased.
A-B Erasing - This feature is great when it comes down to recording off of the radio. You don't have to worry about pausing your recordings while commercials are on. You can just cut them out. A - B editing is where you specify a point A and a point B and then erase everything between those two points.
Dividing Tracks - Not much explanation to do here. Just pick a point on song A and you have two different songs. Song B from the beginning of song A to that point, and song C from that point to the end of song A.
Combining Tracks - Have two songs that you wish were one? Just combine the two into one, and name it what ever you want.
Moving Tracks - All tracks on your MiniDisk can be moved into any order that you wish.
Sound Affect Editing - After recording a few affects on the sound of that song can be applied. You can fade a song in or out. You can add up to 12 decibels to the volume of the song. This comes in hand when you've recorded from a soft source, and the top volume couldn't even shake granny's vases on the table. Add a couple decibels, and blow your ears away.
Digital and Analog Input / Outputs - This is one of the weaker aspects of the MDS-JE440. It only has two inputs and one output. One input is analog and the other digital. The output is analog. What does this mean, and what affect will this have? Having only one digital input means that you can only digitally record MiniDisks from other digital devices, and can't make digital recordings from your MiniDisk player. The analog input and output allow you to not only make recordings, but also to record from your MiniDisk player. Unfortunately they won't be digital recordings.
Finial Judgement
Over all this is a sound player. The limited inputs\outputs are not too bad of a draw back. It has most of the editing features that other, more expensive players, have. The main two missing features are high speed dubbing and pitch control. If you do buy this, or any other home MiniDisk component, you'll also need to get a portable player so that you can listen to your music on the go. At only $200, and falling, this is one of the best units that you can get for your money.
