| ser968's Full Review: Sony STR-DE945 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I purchased this receiver to replace my ProLogic receiver - Sony STR-D990. This receiver was 7 years old (and still working perfectly). I wanted a DTS/Dolby Digital receiver that would help complete my home theater. Before buying this receiver, I compared it to similar receivers by Kenwood, JVC, Onkyo and Pioneer.
I chose this because I got the biggest bang for my buck. The features that were important to me were: Soundfields, functionality of remote control and number of available hookups. None of the other receivers had the number of soundfields that this Sony does. I found that the Sony's remote had a lot a functionality, but it is a bit difficult to get used to.
The sound that comes from this receiver is great and I find that I can easily customize the sound to my preferences based on what I am listening to - CDs, DVDs, radio, etc.
I paid less than $400 for this receiver - $368+$25 shipping, which I thought was a great deal. I'm not sure I would have paid $500 for this receiver - that is what you usually see it priced for in the big electronics stores. But for $400, I think it is a great deal.
In the end, this receiver plays music. I was amazed at the difference in sound between ProLogic and Dolby Digial DTS - it is definitely worth the upgrade. However this upgrade is only necessary if you want a complete home theater. If you will only be using this receiver to play CDs, tapes or radio, I would stick with some of the more inexpensive models that don't have the DTS/DD decoders.
