Pros: Small footprint, curvy aesthetics, nice features, good battery life
Cons: A little fragile for some, no EQ!
The Bottom Line: Buy it as soon as you can, and take your CD collection to the road. Just avoid the traffic you won't hear, believe me it's embarressing =).
jdhpolson's Full Review: Panasonic SL-CT570 Personal CD Player
My Experience With the SL-CT570
This is a great little machine - finally a CD player that I can go running with (thanks to the 40 seconds of anti-shock option)! And, if I choose, switch back to 10 seconds of anti-shock to preserve battery life. The player itself is very small, not much bigger than a CD, and light too, you will barely remember that you are carrying it. Be careful when walking through the streets with the SL-CT570, you can be having so much fun that you "lose" your concentration and almost get hit by a truck. Take it from someone who knows firsthand how embarressing this can be =).
The sound quality is really quite decent, bass and trebles are articulated quite clearly, and Panasonic have done the decent thing and have thrown in a couple of really top-notch headphones. The remote controller, reminiscent of those found in MiniDiscs is functional and light, and shouldn't contrast too sharply with the average wardrobe. A number of the capabilities that come with the SL-CT570 are very helpful, such as the ability to produce digital output, which makes recording to MiniDisc a very easy experience - although not unique amongst portable CD players, it is still a good thing to have in your portable music arsenal. Battery life is very good, on a set of powerful rechargable batteries I was able to extract around 40 hours of playback, quite decent considering that I used 40 seconds of anti-shock, and ran a lot, for the duration of that usage period.
There are only a few negative points about this CD player:
i) Fragile - Very f r g i l e - this thing could break easily if dropped, so don't do the basketball thing with it. If you want a portable music system to do mountain biking, look at something like a Sony MZ33 MiniDisc, they are just the treat for that kind of thing.
ii) No EQ - Please! Most Mp3/some MD players have EQ, so why can't we have them with CD players (all portables this is)? Waaaaah.
iii) There is no iii. This is actually a pretty good player =).
Why I Bought It?
Because it looks good, had nice features from the outside, and I needed to upgrade my ailing Panasonic SL-S230. It is a pretty nice looking CD player, although a range of colours would be nice (perhaps they just didn't have them at the store in which I bought my model).
Who Should Buy This CD Player
Most people really, except for those rugged types who enjoy jumping off 40 feet cliffs while jamming along to Beethoven, or any other form of music for that matter. Otherwise, at $170, this is economical enough for most students, with enough grunt to see you through to your next portable CD player upgrade.
