| momsworkinlate's Full Review: Panasonic SL-PH270 Personal CD Player |
Last fall all our oldest son wanted for his birthday was his own Portable CD Player. He already had a small RCA CD Player/Radio. That was getting pretty beat up as the entire family used it outside in warm weather. Now he was hoping for a Walkman style that he could use walking to the bus stop and back and forth on the bus. He also has a later bedtime than his younger brothers and being the typical adolescent had the need to listen to his tunes.
Liam had mentioned during last summer that one of his friends had a CD Player which had speakers built in -- "that is so cool Mom!". I try to listen to what things my family and friends like and tuck those thoughts away for future surprises. When I began my search for Liam’s CD Player I kept that feature in mind.
I found the Panasonic SL-PH270 Personal CD Player. Not having much knowledge of CD players (I just pop everything into the PC) I asked my husband what he thought about it. He reminded me how long the batteries in his Aiwa CD player lasted (no more than eight hours of play time). Panasonic claimed their SL-PH270 Personal CD Player would run for twenty-five hours on batteries. He didn't think the built in speakers would be great, but we both agreed that this was for a twelve year old. To our son and his friends we decided it would be pretty cool. John also thought the Antishock with Skip Protection would be a good feature.
Gathering together my Amazon.com gift certificate codes (we'd accumulated them from various points programs) I made my order. When the CD Player arrived I tucked it away for safe keeping until the big day. Liam was thrilled with his gift. He was so impressed. He had liked what he had read about the Panasonic SL-PH270 Personal CD Player but did not expect to receive it for his birthday as it is a bit pricey.
The following are features of the Panasonic SL-PH270 Personal CD Player.
* Built-in speakers deliver stereo output;
The sound is good for what it is. The kids love it. My husband and I however find that it has a tinny sound that is annoying. With the headphones on the sound is great.
* Bass boost offers robust performance;
This feature works well with the headphones. It does not work on the speakers.
* 40-second antiskip buffer and 24-track programmable CD memory;
The antiskip is great for everyday use. Liam doesn't use this for jogging but had taken it for walks and does his chores plugged in. The 24 track programmable memory works but that is a feature he doesn't utilize. Personally I can't see the need for it. I’m not fussy when it comes to music though. I just
want to plug and play.
* Compact design with heat resistant, polycarbonate cabinet
Nice silver gray casing. This is very durable. Liam has dropped and banged this around quite a bit and it doesn't show bangs and nicks in it.
* Stereo headphones and AC adapter;
The sound is nice with the headphones. I would prefer not to hear his tunes while we're sharing space and I'm trying to listen to something else. I tune it out but every so often I find it gets really annoying. My husband has a headset that we use that can be blared and little if any sound is heard by those nearby. Perhaps I should look into a different type of headphone for him for his next birthday.
The AC adapter comes in handy if his batteries run out as the cord is longer than most of my appliance cords (which never are long enough). He can plug it in and move it around to find a spot which is easy for him to access easily. We estimate the cord to be about five feet long.
* Hold and Pause;
You press the Hold button to prevent accidentally hitting the stop button while moving around. The Hold button is a slide/switch button on the narrow side of the player. Pause is just that - works great :grin: Liam can hit pause while I am talking to him then resume his music when I am done.
*Low Battery Indicator;
Nice feature. But nicer yet is the fact that Panasonic claims your batteries will last twenty-five hours. I know they do - and in fact they exceed that by several hours. Liam listens do his CD Player for at least an hour on school days on the commute to and from school. He and his friends also listen to music at the bus stop via the speakers.
Often you will find me listening to his music with him. Albeit our styles don’t usually match we can agree to bands like Creed. As a matter of fact as I am typing this he is on the kids computer just a few feet away. I am being treated to the likes of Linkin Park as he Plays Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.
It was one such night recently that he popped a CD he burned with songs he knew I’d like into his Panasonic SL-PH270 Personal CD Player. I have to admit that by the time the CD ended I was grateful that it was bedtime. The CD was great - the company absolutely wonderful. The sound from the speakers really uhhh - well, it wasn’t good. I don’t dare tell him how badly I think it sounds for fear he’ll :grin: decide its lousy too.
Who would I recommend the SL-PH270 Personal CD Player for? Well, it is a really nice player for older kids. Liam is almost thirteen and he loves it. His friends think it is pretty cool that they can use it in the speaker mode and all listen together. I really like some of the features - long battery life, the hold and pause buttons and the sound. I think the sound is fantastic with the headset plugged in.
The SL-PH270 Personal CD Player would not be good for someone who was looking for quality sound from a portable CD player’s speakers. It is more than adequate for the kids but would drive someone like me (who is not fussy) crazy if I had to listen to the speakers on a regular basis.
