Oooo, what do I mean by the above? I do wonder. Yes, it was a shocker. I saw this thing in the ads one day, at Target believe it or not, and I wanted it! My last Panasonic portable CD player had lasted me a good 6 years through some MAJOR wear and tear. I dropped it, scratched it, you name it. Yet the thing still runs like new! But WHY Brian? WHY get a new one? Because the features in the CD players these days are nice, plus the new anti-shock features is what I really needed. 40 seconds does nicely.
Speakers
Now, why the shock? The shock is from these built in speakers. I didn't do any research into this player, I simply relied on the Panasonic name, and the fact that my last one is still humming like an angel. I figured the speakers would turn on automatically if you took the heaphones plug out, which could be smart, but a pain in the butt sometimes. But no, it's controlled by a switch which is built in a way so it won't be able to bump it and change the setting, very clever! And the speaker quality, WOW! For this size and price, I expected some cheap little things that couldn't hold a bass pop whatsoever. Granted, they aren't the best things you'll ever hear in your life, but for the size and convenience it's great! They sound great even at high volume.
The Player Itself
The actual sound is great period. The unit has a sturdy opening cover, nice push buttons, and pretty well located features. It's not amazingly fast, but loads up a completely full CD in about 2-3 seconds, not bad for a portable player. It is however very fast at skipping tracks for a portable player. It takes about 1.5 seconds maximum to get from the very beginning of a 12 minute song to the next track. If no one actually cares, that's really good for a portable player. The screen is pretty well done, good detail and easy to read. The only downside; my last one had a backlit screen! I really am going to miss that! The entire unit as a whole is very sturdy and strong. I think it could survive a good fall. It runs on 2 double A batteries, and with anti-shock on, can last up to 25 hours I believe. I'm not sure if that's with speakers or headphones, I would imagine the speakers drain a LOT more power.
The Features
This CD layer is much like every other Panasonic out there. Good features, and done in a good way. The anti-shock is a 40 second memory bank. You'd have to do a LOT to make this baby skip with anti-shock on, however, with it off, the player does skip a bit easier than I would like. As I said above, the speakers are great. Good sound, good quality, low price! The play functions include normal, random, and resume, which is useful if you're in a car trip, basically it stores the track you were on in memory if the unit is turned off so you can go back to that automatically. The player does have a well structured and well located hold switch. The track programming is just as good as it was before, very fun to work with, and easy to understand. The sound modes are interesting. EQ it's marked, you can choose a bass booster, or 'train' which kinda dulls down the sound coming out of headphones that annoy other people. NOTE: EQ is not useable with speakers.
The Accessories
This player comes with an AC adapter and a nice pair of headphones. The AC adapter is small and useful, and the headphones are great. They have good sound quality and the last Panasonic pair I got lasted a LONG time. They were my favorite, until they just got too old and broke on me. That was a lifespan of 4 years I believe, not bad!
So there it is. The little Panasonic player wrapped up in a box. My suggestion, if you are itching for a new CD player, get this one. If you aren't, break your other one or something, go buy this player NOW! They're a good price, and even better when you find a good dea in the store. My personal experience: this player was VERY hard to find, ONLY Target actually had it! I do, however, say: it is totally worth it!
