| Todd's Full Review: Panasonic SL-CT470 Personal CD Player |
Once again Panasonic has delivered the best sounding portable CD player on market! Selling at $100 it delivers surprisingly good sound. Detail is very good and is not harsh, hard or bright. The midrange is smooth and clean and the bass tight and deep.
The anti shock memory 4.0 allows for a lot of movement without a skip. It also affects the overall sound very little if at all. Some of the older anti shock systems were noisy or changed the tonal quality of the player. This is a nice improvement!
4 EQ settings allows the listener to season the music to taste. For my taste the normal setting is the only choice. The Live EQ brightens up the sound recessing the bass. Yuck. S-XBS, the bass goes into boomy mode, highs fade into the distance. Again yuck. Mode 4 is Train and it just sounds bad - highs are muffled, bass is boomy and the mids don't sound natural and are too forward.
The headphone output is ok but does not deliver much power. Efficient headphones like Grado will work but anything that requires more power will sound thin and less detailed. The line out has quite good sound. Using the line out into a headphone amp like the AirHead can turn this into an awesome setup.
Some of the other features are Resume/Random/Normal selector and a hold button. These are on the side of the unit with the line out, headphone out and volume control. AC is supplied via the rear of the player and the adapter comes with the player. All other functions are on the lid forward/backward, EQ, memory/recall, shock on/off continuous play and play/pause, off.
The SL CT 470 is sleek and comes in 2 colors- silver and blue. It is fairly durable but I wouldn't expect it to survive a drop on concrete. 2 years of heavy use will probably kill it but for $99 what do you expect. I got much better sound at that price than I expected! That's all that matters to me.
As for the headphones - landfill. I hate to pollute and that includes my ears!!! So to the garbage they go. Grado, Sennheiser, Beyer and Etymotic all make headphones that will work WAY better in the 470. Again, adding an amp will make this an even more glorious listening experience.
