| mstyles3k's Full Review: Philips eXpanium EXP103 Personal CD Player |
I really wish I had bought the Expanium. Instead, I bought the RCA HP2410 player. Fortunately, I have friends that own the Expanium and have had the opportunity to play around with it. Believe me, the Expanium exceeds the RP2410 and the rest of the competition by a long shot.
To begin with, the price is relatively reasonable. Although looking at the price of first glance makes some want to scream (about 200 dollars), the money spent is well worth it. Most of the hybrid MP3/CD players cost upward of $125, where the higher you get is the higher quality you receive (in most cases, there are exceptions). With the Expanium right in the middle of the lot, it proves itself a great player for many (if not all) audiophiles.
One drawback is the battery life. Although it is expected for this type of cd player to drain the battery, the average life of two AA batteries is about 15 hours with the Expanium. Not bad, but with the existing high price of batteries, it proves itself a bit of a problem.
The joy I had about the Expanium was that the cd player was so easy to use. Unkile some players that use a file navigation system similar to Windows' My Computer, the Expanium uses only a track-forward or track-backward navigation. This can be a problem if you burn an mp3 cd with many files, but if you utilize folders and subfolders, there is no problem whatsoever.
The other drawback I saw with this player was its inability to display ID3 track tags. When using mp3 cd's with a lot of files, it helps to know the basic information about the song you're listening to (i.e. artist and song name). Unfortunately, you only get the index number (which refers to the folder you're in) and the track number of the song.
Despite the Expanium's inability to display mp3 track tags, the player is phenomenal. It surpassed all of my standards and blew me away. Of course, you listen to me talk about how good the player is or buy it for yourself and see how good it is. If you don't want to buy it right away, you can borrow it from a friend or see it at a hands-on store (like Best Buy). Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
