| chiminou's Full Review: RCA RP2360 Personal CD Player |
I received my first cd player at Christmas 1999, it was a plastic thing that broke after two weeks.
I returned to Zellers to get a refund and decided to try out a few of their available models. After a few tries and unsatisfied, I saw the RCA RP2360 for about 99$ (can).
It had bass boost options and when I turned it on my reaction was "WOW". The sound at normal setting was good, but with the addition of the bass boost it was amazing. And to this day, I still think it is the best "bass boost" I have ever tried! So I chose that cd player and I've been happy about it eversince.
(I recently bought a RCA RP2527 to play MP3s, a sad imitation of the late RCA 2360. see BELOW for the REVIEW).
(I now use a cd/mp3 player iRiver SlimX iMP-550)
SOUND
The sound is very very good.
Its clear and realistic, minus the cheap headphones provided in the package.
I use Koss portapro (see link below to that review).
Bass-Boost
There is a control button for the bass boost feature. Press once for Bass Boost I and twice for II. Both settings sound great. I prefer the bass boost II. This player is the only one, to this day, that plays as well as this, it is punchy and soft and the same time. The best drum sounds I have ever gotten from CDs or CDR/RW. The bass frequencies do not overload or become overwhelming, nor distort, nor become "boomy" (boomy: making the song very bassy and unclear) . It gives a good "kick" sound to the bass-drums and the snare always sound round and present. The high frequencies aren't hidden under the bass neither, they are very clear and soft, not agressive. The mid frequencies are well balanced, present and soft.
Original CDs sound as good as CDrs in the RP2360.
I give a 10 on 10 for sound quality.
This player has a lot of volume too. It is a roll-button located on the right side of the unit, goes from 0 to 10. (seems all apparatus are mostly built for right handed people)
I never needed to go over 6. I am usually confortable around 4.
There's no line out output. (I didn't care for one either, did not bother me)
Features
It plays CDs and CDRs.
Buttons
A total of 9 buttons are available.
One made especially for "shuffle".I used it a few times, it works fine.
Another button for prog/play, that I never used, I never cared to.
And one for MODE. (never used it either)
It has a rewind and a forward button, enabling you to scroll through a song or skip to the next one, a play/pause button, a stop button and the ESP button that toggles the 45 sec esp on and off.
It also features the Bass Boost button that I mention earlier.
All buttons are a fair size, easy to press and after 4 years, they still work properly.
Display
The display is a two line LCD. One for the battery info and the other for track number and elapsed time. The fonts are big and easy to read.
The unit looked cool and modern at the time I got it. I am very careful with my things, apart from a few small scratches, it is still intact.
ESP - 45 second advanced skip protection -
It works as it's supposed to. But it drains the batteries very quickly. I usually kept it off. Without it, the player skips very easily. Just the movement of removing the jack of the headphones makes it skip.
It began skipping last month, for no reason. I actually started using the ESP because of that, till it skipped anyway. I think the player reached the end of its life...
It was reliable for a very long time. I used it frequently/daily on my commute to work for about 4 or 5 years.
Batteries
Requires 2 AA batteries. The battery compartment is located underneath the player and the door of the compartment is attached and non removable, which is pretty neat and handy cause I drop those too often. It locks up tight and remains closed.
The batteries do not last very long on this player. I used rechargeables which made the duration even shorter. But I saved money. My rechargeables would trigger the "low bat icon" even right after I completely recharged them.
This would be my only con.
You can plug in a DC adapter 4.5V.
