Cons: Annoying permanent hiss/buzz noise, Mechanical slide and headphones
The Bottom Line: Regardless of ratings, if you use the CD player at higher volume and your ears can take it, then buy it. Otherwise get something else or wait.
greenee70's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-EJ01 Personal CD Player
Looks and Design:
This CD player looks amazing and there's no argument about it.
CD loading mechanism:
This could have been like the one used in the car CD's
Sound Quality:
This is the most important feature in any sound system whether it is portable or not. Unfortunately the sound is damaged by the constant hiss in the background of the music you're listening to. Well, it might be that some of us got a unit from a wrong batch, but that noise is rather annoying. I'm a musician and when I'm listening to classical music or to any other sort of music I hear this buzz, it's like the high pitched noise you hear when you have gone to a rock concert and you forgot to take your ear protection plugs. It's also the same kind of noise that people suffering Tinnitus would hear. Someone has said before that it's because of the servo-drive or motor of the unit, someone has said it's the G-Protection. Well whatever it is, if Sony would solve this problem, I would really buy this model again.
I returned mine to the store and tried several others but I got the same result. Then it turns out that Sony's technical support said that the noise I was hearing is a fabrication defect. Because of that the said they could not replace my unit with another and added that it was a noise that most people would not perceive. They added that I probably perceived it because I'm a musician. Now I'm stuck with my old Sony D-345 and waiting for a good quality personal CD player to hit the market.
If you already own the D-EJ01, give yourself the opportunity to confirm my findings. Slide your favorite CD in the unit late at night when it's all quiet.
1. Listen to the CD while the volume is at "0" or at the lowest possible. You should perceive the annoying noise. same as I did.
2. Gradually raise the volume and try keeping the perception of that noise. You'll see what I mean.
Battery life, weight and size are superb and the remote works fine and is very useful.
Finally, the magnesium dye cast is not metal, magnesium is a mineral. The cd is made of plastic a sort of magnesium alloy, call it what you want. If you touch the surface with sweat in your hands the cast on it will come off. After 5 months the beautiful looking surface had lost it's charm and appeal and it showed scratches.
This is an expensive unit and you might not be so lucky as I was to get my money back.
If anyone out there knows another comparable CD player to this please let me know, as I'm still looking for the best player in the market. My ears deserve the best.
