| drewpi's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-EJ616CK Personal CD Player |
Anyone who is searching the market for a new portable CD player should definitely consider this one, or one of it's similar models. The new line of Sony Walkman's are the best portable CD players out there, and with a name like Sony, you know you are getting superior quality products.
For those of you out there who purchase products based on their looks, and not their technology or quality, you are in luck, because with this player you get awesome design along with great technology. This player goes along with the new generation of CD players that have the LCD display on the cover, not on the front. Also, the important buttons are surrounding the display. This player also features a sleek, thin design, which is not much larger than a CD. Overall, this is a very cool looking CD player.
Now, for those of you who are like me, and concerned with the technology, quality, and features that the player offers, I am sure that you will be pleased with this one.
As I said before, the LCD display is on the lid of the player. It is surrounded by the standard buttons:
"Play/Pause" - Does exactly what you think
"Stop/Charge" - "Stop" does exactly what you think. This player is compatible with two types of rechargeable batteries, along with the standard "AA" Alkaline or "dry" batteries that you throw away. This player allows the use of either Nickel Cadmium NC-WMAA rechargeable batteries or Nickel Metal hydride NH-WM2AA rechargeable batteries. When you're not using the player, like at night, you keep the batteries in the player, and plug in the DC 4.5 volt AC adaptor, and press "charge", to recharge the batteries. The "dry" throw away batteries last much longer, up to 32 hours, than the rechargeable batteries, up to about 10 hours. You can purchase players that come with the rechargeable batteries, but you can also find them at just about any electronics store.
"Rewind" - These two are self-explanatory
"Fast Forward" -
"Play Mode" - This player offers many different play modes:
----"1"- Plays only the track you set it to
----"SHUF"- Shuffle: Plays through the tracks in a random order
----"PGM"- Programmed Play, lets you program tracks in the order that you want, with up to 64 programmed tracks. Many of you may say, "No CD has 64 tracks, so what is the point of being able to program that many?" If you are asking that question, here's an example of programmed tracks:
1,3,5,6,7,9,13,16,3,6,5,7,1,9... etc
You can program your favorite tracks over and over - up to 64 times.
"Repeat/Enter" - Press this once and the repeat sign appears on the LCD. This means that the player will keep on playing your CD over and over rather than stopping after the last track. You can combine this feature with the different play modes. The "enter" button is simply what you press when you select tracks for programmed play.
"Sound" - This player has a bass boost system, with 3 levels: Normal bass, extra bass, and double extra bass.
That pretty much covers all the buttons, and their operations. This player, like many others, has a hold switch. When this switch is on, nothing can be changed, and any button that is pressed won't function. This is good for when the player is being jostled around and you want it to continue playing.
The Sony D-EJ616CK CD player has a headphone jack, a remote jack, a line out, and adaptor jack. Some packages come with a remote that you can plug into the player. This remote has the main buttons on it for easier control. You can plug your speakers into the line out jack. You can get a package with a DC 4.5 AC adaptor. When you use this, or a cigarette lighter adaptor for your car, the LCD turns on it's indigo light (to be specific, it's and Electronic Luminescent Light). However, the LCD only lights up when you use a power source other than batteries. This is one of the only drawbacks to this player.
The lid of this player is heat-resistant, which helps protect it in hot climates, like your car.
Depending on what package you purchase, there are 2 different hand straps. The cheaper one is simply a strong, elastic like cord that hooks on the back of the player. It forms a loop that you can put your hand through. The better strap is a leather case that fits over the entire player. It has a hole over the LCD so you can see that, and is imprinted with the buttons symbols. These imprints are aligned over the buttons so all functions (except volume and hold) can be easily used when the case is on. There is no mark for the volume buttons (which are on the front of the player), so you have to memorize the locations of the volume buttons and just guess where they are when the case is covering them. The case also features a velcro strap that goes over your hand. It fits perfectly on your hand and stays in place. I use it all the time when I run.
Now for the most important feature: anti-skip. Like I said, I like to use this player when I go running, and it rarely skips. It features Sony's famous "G-Protection" which is really a mini computer chip inside that records the music for the next 45 seconds, and replays it when the CD skips. Unlike other players, you don't have to turn this on every time you listen to music. The G-Protection switch is inside the player, under where the CD goes. Believe it or not, battery life is longer when G-protection is turned on. Anyway, while G-Protection is top of the line, it really is just 45-second anti skip protection. Sometimes when I'm running, I use up all the 45 seconds, and it begins to skip. If you use the player during any strenuous activity, you might have to hold still every once in a while and let the anti-skip build up again. When I go for an hour and a half run, I only have to do this twice. It's not perfect, but it is the closest that you can get.
To add to all the above, this player is very durable. I have accidentally dropped it a few times, and it still works fine.
Here's one last feature that many people don't care about, but I will explain anyway. The player has AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System). There is a little switch in the battery compartment for it. When on, the volume will only go up to a certain level, then stop. It is made to protect your ears from high levels of volume. Personally, I think it is too limiting, and I don't use it.
Overall, this is a fantastic CD-player. I don't think it is the best out there, but for it's price range, it is the best. As for price, the MSRP is $140. If you pay this much you're getting ripped off. All places I've seen (Circuit City, Best Buy, Media Play etc.) sell it for around $100. If you're lucky, you'll hit a sale like I did, and get it for $90. If you're looking for a great CD player, or a great gift for any music lover, consider the Sony D-EJ616CK.
Sony has an entire line of this type of player, here are some other models, some of which are much better than this one, but much more expensive. They have all the same features and looks as the D-EJ616CK, plus some:
Sony E-J715 - This model has remote control, Sony's "Street Style" headphones (wrap around ear), Mini disc link optical digital output, joint text capability. (MSRP - $169.95)
Sony MJ95 - This is the car version of the D-EJ616CK. (MSRP - $169.95)
Sony E-J815 - The King of Sony Portable CD players, but a little out of my price range. If you have the money, check this one out! (MSPR - $189.95)
