| cheapo's Full Review: Sony Network Walkman NW-E3 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
I'll start by saying that this is the most aesthetically pleasing MP3 device available today and that I really wish I could write a good review about it. Unfortunately due to some almost inconceivably poor decisions on Sony's part, this device will probably be unusable for a good percentage of consumers. Firstly, it requires a "manufacturer installed" version of Windows 98. Not 2000, not 95, not a Mac... Only 98. My roommate was able to get it to work with Windows Me, but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule. The install program actually damaged my perfectly stable 2000 installation, necessitating a service pack upgrade.
Further the device transfers file using Sony's inaptly titled "Open" MG software, which requires you to convert any mp3 files to omg files before putting them on the device. This is a relatively simple process, but compared to the simple drag and drop interface used by other devices, it leaves something to be desired.
Finally the device is not expandable. Given the extremely small size of the walkman, I was prepared to sacrifice expandability, but be warned 64 megs is all you are going to get.
In conclusion, this device will lure potential buyers like a Siren, and dash them on the rocks of misguided software design.
