| jhcdesigns's Full Review: Beltronics BEL 890 Radar Detector |
I guess I can say that I've been pretty lucky the last few years. Being almost 19, I have been driving for about 3 years now, and I have never gotten in an accident, or have even gotten a speeding ticket.
Ever since I started driving, I have always wanted to purchase a radar detector. I never got around to it until about a month ago. It's already paid for itself knowing how many tickets I've avoided already because of it.
Living in Arizona, (reknown for bad drivers) there are a lot of red-light radar/cameras, photo radar vans, and police just waiting to give you a ticket. My faithful BEL 890 has given me plenty of advanced warning of photo radar vans coming up on the road as well as police looking for speeders.
One pretty exciting experience I have with my detector happened a few weeks ago, while my roommates and I were driving to LA for the weekend. We were on the I-10W, where the speed limit is 75. It was very late at night, and I have just switched my detector settings to highway and dimmed the display. A Camry pulled up behind me and was tailing me. Pretty soon we found ourselves in this little game of passing each other, going 90-100MPH. It was when I was behind the car that my radar detector started to pick up a signal. "Ka Band," it stated, and the signal was getting stronger and stronger. I quickly slowed down, and changed lanes. The signal alert picked up now, indicating that I was getting closer and closer. I saw the hidden police car, and right as I passed him, the signal just died. "Oh $hi*" I said to my roommates and looked at the rearview mirror to see the cop turn on his headlights and pull out onto the road. For a minute there, I thought he was going to pull me over, and I felt anger at my radar detector for not detecting anything sooner. But at that moment, the cop changed lanes and sped by me. I then knew that my BEL had done a wonderful job, and that the cop was going to pull the Camry over. Sure enough, way down the road, I saw the red and blue lights flashing, and pretty soon later, saw the policeman with the Camry.
That is just one of the many exciting adventures with my BEL.
