* The Market
I bought the Uniden LRD777 3 weeks ago and for a small amount of time between now and the purchase date I was happy. I placed my order online at Bulvedere Home Theater (http://www.satellitezone.com)and I got it for a very good price. They claim to have the best price in the US that remains to be proven! Back to the point I ordered this detector with overnight shipping because I was eager to get my first radar detector! I chose the Uniden LRD777 over others like the Cobra 9850 because of an advertisement i saw claiming that the Uniden was the first to detect the newest Pro Laser 3 and L 2 Guns which i still have no idea what they are except for a form of Lidar but at the time i thought it was important i now know it isn't very important but that what is important is a radar detector that detects Radar Guns and not Grocery Store Doors and is constantly falsing.
* Installation
Installation of this detector is a breeze just place the mounting bracket on your windshield and plug in the cigarette lighter adapter into your 12-volt outlet and plug it into the detector and you are ready to go! A few things I dislike are the flimsy windshield mount its constantly allowing the detector to bounce around and rattle against the windshield. And the cheap way the mount clips to the detector it slide into a slot with locking clips which don't lock well and the detector is constantly sliding off of the mount!
*Advertising VS Facts
I'll admit I was suckered by the advertising. "FIRST TO DETECT THE NEW PRO LASER AND L 2 GUNS" Its a good advertising gimmick.. I have yet to see it detect anything other than x,k and ka I know this may be just my area but I have driven through over 4 states and never has it shown anything except the above mentioned bands. It is also advertised to detect Ultralyte and have 360 laser detection. I have never seen an ULTRALYTE warning or observed 360 laser detection I would get front but not rear..i tried repositioning the detector thinking that could be the problem but to no avail. It also is claimed to have Safety Warning System (SWS) I have never gotten any warnings from it. It does have voice alert which I find annoying its constantly talking and talking when the detector is just falsing!
*City Driving
Honestly I don't recommend this detector for city driving due to the high amount of false alerts you will receive even in city mode. It picks up on almost all Grocery Store doors, keyless entry systems, gas station alarms and all sorts of other electronic devices.. You are really better off just turning down the volume or just turning the detector off for city driving just to avoid the noise it will make. By noise I mean for X and K band is a very shrill and spine tingling sound and it will easily hurt your ears..This detector is basically useless in city!
*Highway Driving
This is where this detector does truly shine! On highway turn up your music and the radar detectors volume which can be loud enough to be easily heard over and music or a gabbing friend whom we all have one of. It has very impressive range I have gotten warnings from as far as 2 miles on straight roads. Now in curvy or hilly roads don't expect performance. Like any detector it detects what is ahead of you not what's over hills or around corners! But over all this detector is great on highway. The only drawback is that it occasionally detects other detectors and goes haywire! But other than that on the highway its worth it!
*"Success Stories"
This detector has saved me from a few tickets in just 3 weeks. I drive a 30 minute stretch everyday from my home to my girlfriends house and this highway is made for 100mph travel yet the limit is 60 and NOBODY goes the limit but usually I and 10-20 over the limit just like everyone else. Well, there is one curve you come around just before the exit to the airport and on that particular day a cop was hiding in the bushes in the curve but my Uniden was on the job and detected it almost 2 miles early and with the helpful LEDs for distance I was able to slow my speed to an appropriate level! That would have been almost a $300 ticket. I did however notice people getting beside me or behind me and watching my detector! Overall its a fair detector my only main reason for not liking it is the constant false alarms! If i ever need to find a grocery store ill just turn this little gizmo on :) DYQ685
