| biscuitfarmer's Full Review: Infinity Kappa Perfect12.1 Car Subwoofer |
I am a huge car audio enthusiast. Ever since my first car back in 1997, I have been trying to push the envelope on what my vehicles can do. My very first car, a 1995 Mustang started out with the most simplistic of sound systems, featuring a floating box for ease of removal, with a couple of 12" subwoofers and just a basic amp. I upgraded the deck, the wires, and all of that, but at the end of the day, it was still your basic sound system.
Since then I have done much more work, including a full car audio system on my competition 2003 Toyota Celica GT-S. I went all out on that car, with custom fiberglass enclosures, custom highlights, and lots of performance to go along with it, including nine 10" subwoofers, and more door speakers than anyone could ever imagine. There were amps all over the place, extra batteries, capacitors, everything. It was definitely the sport compact car audio enthusiast's dream setup.
Ever since then I have been involved in the industry, attending shows, working on comptetition cars, while trying to avoid sinking too much money into my own vehicles, as I have a son to feed now. Regardless, I have managed to create quite the impressive sound system in all three of my vehicles, and plan on doing substantially more into the future.
But the one that comes from all of this, is that I truly do know my car audio. I have tried so many different subwoofers, played around with numerous decks, and seen a large variety of application combinations that have worked and haven't worked. I have touched hundreds of systems in my years, and with that experience, I know what will work and what won't work.
Infinity KAPPA PERFECT 12.1 Subwoofer
I'm not going to continue in my great tradition of trashing infinity products, because the only infinity products that truly deserve to be dumped in the trash are the BASSLINK subs. Other than those, Infinity makes an excellent product, which is why they are one of the biggest names in car audio today.
One of the speaker series that has really excelled for Infinity has been their Infinity KAPPA PERFECT line of speakers. If someone has knowledge of car audio, they have undoubtably heard of Infinity and this series, and have probably more good to say than bad. This line has been winning competitions for years, and at just $150-$180 per speaker, you just can't beat the performance that you get out of them.
Sound Quality
The sound quality on these subs isn't perfect, as the name would suggest. They definitely need a finely tuned box, that I would recommend coating with some sort of rubberized material. The reason behind this, is to prevent rattle from the box. Many subs can overcome box rattle, but the Infinity shake so hard in the box that they produce an insane amount of box rattle if not taken care of. A little carpet can help this out some, but I still recommend a bit of rubber coating, which can be purchased in a spray can and really will give huge difference to the actual thumping of the bass.
With dynamat in place, and the box not rattling, the speakers themselves under manufacturer's specifications have great performance and can hit hard, while at the same time produce ride quality sound that you can count on over and over again.
Durability
These are some of the most indestructable speakers on the market. If you were to watch how some of my friends treat these subs, you would think that they were trying to blow them on purpose, but it's damn near impossible. These subs can hold up to some pretty aggressive sound handling and they can do it for hours at a time, without any noticeable issues, even over the long term. I have seen these subs last 3-4 years, without any issues at all. Very rarely will you have to swap these speakers out, and if you do, it's probably because you drilled a hole through the cone, because I just can't picture them blowing out on their own, especially under normal use.

Final Thoughts
This is one of the most tried and true speakers on the market. It has been tested in event after event, and it is still one of the most used series of speakers on the market for competitions and road use. Regardless of the application, I have full faith that this is going to be one awesome speaker for your vehicle. They hit hard, they last a long time, and they are relatively inexpensive. So, add a couple extra subs, and let loose, because you are going to blow the birds out of the trees when you pass by with a 4 pack of these in your trunk.
