| adam728's Full Review: Rockford Fosgate RFZ1412 Car Speaker |
I hate to do this, since everyone here loves these speakers so much, but I don't like them. They are OK at best, and the sound quality is not that great. A JL Audio W-0 or even Rockfords own XLC's have it all over the Punch line of subs. I have seen many in vehicles and was never impressed. We swapped a pair of these 12's in a 1.25 ft^3 (per sub) box back and forth with a pair of Pioneer Diamondplate 12's also in a sealed box. We switched subs back and forth like 4 times in this kids car, and I can say the Pioneers were far better. They were about equal in SPL, but the Pioneers went so much lower and sounded so much better. The Pioneer subs don't have a rep for having the best sound quality either.
All in all, I have heard these in about 10 different cars. On kid had a pair of tens that were pretty good sounding. They were in a decently large ported box, and could only take about 80 rms each without distorting. It's just that the F3 on these is so high that it takes a huge box ported low to get real extension out of these. These seem like they would be decent home speakers, being that you'd have lots of room and usually little power. But for a car they just don't do it.
If you want a little better of a sub, get a JL Audio W-0, Rockford Fosgate XLC, MTX 6000, Image Dynamics IDQ, Pioneer Diamondplate, or Infinity Reference.
For awesome subs that require big amps (like 500-1500 watts, not a 100 like the RFZ) look at Infinity Perfect, CMP, Mass, Cerwin Vega Stroker, Digital Designs 9015, The Beast, The Mouse, and the list goes on and on and on. These are real subs, capable of doing 150 db with just a pair and the right install. I'd like to see a pair of RFZ12's do over 138db with even the most perfect install. By the way, the 12 db difference would be approximatly 4 times as loud.
Oh yea, an addition. Last week I almost changed my opinion on these subs. We were at Best Buy and I seen a sales person showing a kid 2 of these 12's running off a Rockford 250aII. It was hitting LOUD and LOW. Then I looked and seen that he also had 2 Vega 12's running on an 800aII. I don't know if the seller knew it was running, but he seemed to be making a sale on the kid. Seemed kind of wrong to me, because I am 99% sure he told the kid that just the RF's were making that music. Probably made a sale and a commision.
