Well, you know what they say, you don't know how good you've got it till you don't have it any more....That was definitely the case for me with this AT&T answering machine! I'm not a big fan of AT&T, or their products, but when I shopped for an answering machine, the AT&T 1717 had most of the features I was looking for. I'd given up on answering machines with tapes that wear out or malfunction, I needed a digital machine and this one was it!
At $40, I personally felt it was a little pricey, considering the cost of technology is dropping pretty rapidly, and also since I was only looking to spend about $30 at the time, however, all in all, I would have to say I was very happy with this machine.
I feel that it was very dependable, although that is something one can never be certain about, since if you're not getting your messages, sometimes you don't KNOW it!! However, I don't think I can recall anyone ever saying that they called and not having gotten the message.
The controls on the machine were easy to manage, and the instructions to operate the machine were easy to follow as well. A particularly nice feature is that the instructions for programming the time/day feature are imprinted on the bottom of the machine, so you don't have to go running for your manual every time you have a power outage.
Probably my favorite feature of the phone would have to be the fact that you can select which messages you delete and which ones you save. This may seem insignificant, but if you have had a machine that doesn't offer this, you know what a nuisance it is to have to choose between all or nothing.
This machine did not require battery back-up to maintain your messages in the event of a power outage, which was a nice plus. I hate having to look at that stupid blinking light telling me that the battery needs to be replaced again (or that it needs one, for that matter, since my kids are of the opinion that the battery in the answering machine is fair game if they need one for a toy!)
Finally, remote retrieval of messages was fairly simple. I will admit, I never did master doing it without that little wallet card they give you with the machine, but I don't think there was anything I couldn't do remotely that I could do if I were standing right there with my machine.
Overall, I would recommend this machine to anyone who needed a digital answering machine. I feel that it was a very good purchase and as I think about it writing this review, I may just go out and get another one!
You may have noticed that throughout my review I have referred to this answering machine in the "past". That is because *sob* it met with an early demise. It seems that the machine was not built to withstand a lightening strike. Sadly, I did not replace it with the same unit, mostly due to the fact that I could get a different digital machine for about $30, which is what I consider to be reasonable for an answering machine these days. Much to my dismay, all answering machines are not created equal, as you may note by reading my review of the Southwestern Bell that I replaced it with.
