I'm a sucker for getting myself into a mindset where I need something, I was finding my old cordless phone to be getting a little short for batery life, and decided to get a newer phone.
I went on a research mission to find a phone that would have great length of time for talking without the phone dying on me. I had owned devices that used NiMH batteries (Nickel Metal-Hydride) and knew that I wanted a phone that used those batteries. (In many cases NiMH batteries can outlast the best Alkalines Duracell Ultra and Energizer Titanium)
My reviews have always contained a list of Pros, Cons and Conclusion for the easiest way to read.
The Pros
-The dual speakerphone is great, I don't think I've ever used the handset ever without using the speakerphone on it, it allows you to place it on a table in front of you and do other things without having an annoying cord for the headset. Most importantly, no one so far has been able to tell that it is a Speakerphone, unless I move too far away from the receiver. Of course having the speakerphone on the handset makes that rare.
-The speakerphone on the base is also great because if the batteries are going to die, I can always switch over to the base and talk through it.
-The base and handset both have keypads, which makes it nice for an office type scenario, enabling you to easily punch a phone number (the bases's keypad has nice big and rubbery numbers)
-The other primary feature of the phone is the dual backlighting, I cannot comment much on this feature since I do not have call display, however I did set a few friends onto the "orange" display, and the colors are effective for distinguishing between "friends" and "business" for instance.
-This phone is Digital, and I must admit, it does make it slightly clearer to hear the other person.
-The phone does have a caller's list for keeping your phone list in. (although it does have a con to it-read below)
-I do like the size of the handset, it's really nice and small, looking very much like a cell phone but having a longer depth to it.
-The NiMH batteries have a really nice feature that adds to the phone, and that is the phone does not have any memory, which makes it nice knowing I don't have to let it run out. Although the the length of talk time is generally a con (below).
-The handset has a very small antenna, which offers great reception even without pulling out, it's only needed to be pulled out when you're very far from the base.
-The phone comes with a belt clip
-The base can be installed upright, or left on a desk, the charging cradle can be rotated for wall charging.
-The unit has dual antennie, they do seem to help with reception a bit.
The Cons
-The most annoying thing I've found with this phone is that it has a 1/5 - 1 second delay when you pickup the handset, I have to wait until "Talk" shows on the screen before I can say "Hi". I've gotten into the habit of waiting, but at first it was quite annoying. This also could provide a frustration for those not using the speakerphone on the handset and cannot see the screen, they may have to guess when to first respond.
-I was dissapointed with the talk time of the phone, it only seems to last about 3.5 hours, but it does have a great length for standby.
-I was a little dissapointed with the range that this phone has, It was clearer then my 900 Mhz phone, but I had slightly greater expectations from it.
-I also noticed a very tiny buzz which is audible in dead silent situations when you view the caller list on the handset. The buzz dissapears once you leave the menu.
-The caller's list is a little frustrating I find because it needs odd buttons to get into the list. I wish that they made it a one button entry system.
-Although I like the function button, which allows you to navigate between callers and menus, but I did find the reasons for the button are rather lacking, it would have been nice if they had made the button more organized.
-Although for myself, this is not a con at all, for some it may be, the phone does not look as good as some of the other versions made by Panasonic.
-The handset is not flat at the top, it's slightly slanted which for myself who likes to lean the handset on a shoulder or anything else, it tends to slip away from your ear, which was surprisingly annoying, and resulted in me using the speakerphone instead.
In Conclusion
I do really enjoy having this phone, the speakerphone on the handset works great for myself, but I was surprised at the number of little annoying things with it. But don't get me wrong, the annoying side is not enough for me to be displeased with it. It just makes me see this phone as good but not great. Unfortunately, I found the price tag for this unit to be a little expensive for what I got out of it. So if you find yourself spending a lot for it, bewarned, you may not get what you thought out of it.
