| oc8493's Full Review: Panasonic KX TC1700 900 MHz 1-Line Cordless Phone |
We got this Panasonic TC-1700-B back in November to replace the old cordless that died. The first thing I noticed was the clear reception. The 900 Mhz does make a big difference. The other features (such as built in caller ID, voice mail light, and easy to read display) make this phone a nice addition. You can even pull up a previous number on the caller ID, and hit the talk button, and the phone will automatically dial the number for you.
I have, however, run in to a few minor problems. First, it can be a little hard to program. (Of course, this is probably my fault, since I didn't really read the directions.....as usual) But, once it is programmed, the internal battery lasts for a long time on stand-by. I'm talking about ten plus hours, and the strength meter still shows full. The second problem I have encountered is the internal quality. After about five months, the reception quit. I would stand within one foot of the charging base, and the phone would still tell me that it was out of range. Hitting the channel button did not help, either. However, we took it back to Sam's club, and they replaced the phone with out a hassle. Which leads me to the third problem, which is Panasonic, itself.
My parents had the exact same phone (that is how I found out about this phone in the first place). They also started having reception problems. So, they took it to the authorized repair shop. My parents were told that the phone was not covered under the warranty because 'they' found evidence of water damage. My parents had to buy a new phone. And, by the way, the phone sat on the wall, three plus feet from any water source.
The only other problem (which is minor) that I discovered, was the way the charger was designed. When I hung the charger base on the wall, and placed the phone in the cradle, the contacts did not line up quite right, and therefore, the phone would not charge. No big deal, I just took it off the wall. But, it could come in contact with water, and we wouldn't want that ;-)
Last month, we had to return our 1700-B and it was replaced with the newer 1701-B. It would appear that Panasonic fixed a lot of the problems (I actually got the phone to sit on the wall, and charge). In any case, the quality of the reception, and the great features, make the Panasonic TC-1701-B a very valuable phone to have. Sam's club had it for sale for about $65.00.
