I'm using a Velodyne CT-120 12" powered subwoofer in my 'flagship' home theater hook-up. I decided not to go completely overboard with the subwoofer. I was looking at the EarthQuake Supernova for a whooping $1200! I decided to invest more money into my 'front stage'. Well, I then decided to look at subwoofers. I saw models from brands like Klipsch, PSB, Velodyne, and Polk. The Velodyne's had the cleanest sound by far. I decided to buy the Velodyne CT-120. I didn't need a 15" because my room wasn't all that large. So I bought my cable and hooked this thing up to my Marantz SR-14EX. Audiophile quality? Depends on how you look at it. This thing is well worth a $1000! Anyway, here's what I found with the Velodyne CT-120:

If you can find this thing for $500, go for it! It's well worth it. Even the CT-80 8" powered subwoofer can pump out some powerful bass. Well, the Velodyne CT-120 will give you a boatload of more bass than the 8". I'd have to consider the Velodyne CT-120, "BEST BUY". It's by far the best in its class with the cleanest and most powerful bass. This thing went into direct competition with the Cerwin-Vega! LW12 12" powered subwoofer. I own the LW12, and it is hooked up to one of my Yamaha RX-V995s. Well, there's no listening room like your own home. After both sub's drivers have broken in, I decided to compare both of them directly on the Marantz SR-14EX. Overall, you can't do any better than Velodyne. So get yourself to Circuit City and hear this thing! You won't regret buying it, you won't even have to think twice!
Looks and Styling:
I think that a lot of 12" subwoofers look really neat. This is a front firing one. I actually prefer front firing. Floor firing subwoofers are good for large rooms, or if your corners are too tight to place a subwoofer in. Well, I tucked my Velodyne CT-120 in the corner for the best bass response, but it is still clearly visible. It is a handsome sub, or at least it doesn't have a cheap quality cabinet. Don't hide it, be proud of it.
The quality on the Velodyne CT-120 and other Velodyne products is no where close to being cheap. They are built tough, and will last for a lifetime, or at least for many years to come. The cabinet is built tough, and the driver is also very solid and durable. The Velodyne CT-120 should really last!
The Velodyne CT-120 is at the top. It's without doubt the best in its class. Now some may say, "Where did the Cerwin-Vega! LW12 come from?" Well, Cerwin-Vega! makes great speakers, and I'm very happy owning a LW12. Anyway, both are some of the best that you can buy in the price range. The LW12 has an MSRP of $499, but I managed to buy it for $299. You can also find it online at www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com for $279. The Velodyne CT-120 has an MSRP of $599, but I got it for $499. Both subs have very clear bass, and also pack a lot of power. They are boomy, but in that good impressive way. The Velodyne CT-120 isn't like a KLH that will just make things rattle. The only difference between the Velodyne CT-120 and Cerwin-Vega! LW12 is the handling below 20hZ. The Velodyne CT-120 handles the bass below 20hZ in a very clean manner, while the sound quality on the Cerwin-Vega! LW12 begins to become muddy. The Velodyne CT-120 and Cerwin-Vega! LW12 both handle very well, but the Velodyne CT-120 handles with total clarity at every point of the spectrum. Watch some movies on DVD, such as the Matrix. The bass response from the Velodyne CT-120 should really impress you! That 12" driver sure can move a lot of air. The bass overall is very clean, and the Velodyne CT-120 sets itself apart from others, it is the best in its class by far.
Ease of Use:
The backpanel is easy to use. You just turn the knob to the volume level. Anyway, some subwoofers have poor controls, but the CT-120 and LW12 both were very responsive, and the controls were excellent. The backpanel is also not cheap looking on the Velodyne CT-120, like it is on some Audiosource subwoofers.
The Velodyne CT-120 is an ideal subwoofer for medium sized rooms. Just tuck it into a corner, and prepare to be amazed with clean heart pounding bass. The Velodyne CT-120 and Cerwin-Vega! LW12 handle very well, but the Velodyne CT-120 has much cleaner performance below 20hZ. The build quality on the Velodyne CT-120 is impressive. The cabinet is also not cheap, like some other subs are. The Velodyne CT-120 is worth every penny, you won't have to think twice, this is truly a "BEST BUY".
