Twist-up eyecup lubricant contaminates the exit pupil lens

Written: Jan 01 '02
Pros:Good solid waterproof construction.
Cons:Lubricant used for twist-up eyecups becomes sticky under cold weather conditions.
The Bottom Line: Do not waist your money. You will encounter more frustration than you ever bargained for!

If you live in a geographical area that experiences cold to extreme cold weather during the late fall and winter months, then you will undoubtedly experience difficulties using the Bushnell Legend models 13-4208 (8 x 42) and the 13-0142 (10 x 42) in the field.

During cold weather the lubricant used for the twist-up eyecups becomes thick and glue like making it practically impossible to twist the eyecup up or down.

But worse yet, the lubricant becomes so thick that if you are a hunter and walking through brush or dense cover, bits of dried leaves, branches, pine needles etc.. get stuck to the inner walls of the eyecups. When you try to clean the eyecups out, if you are using a lint free cloth, the lubricant smears onto the exit pupil lens contaminating it and reducing your binocular's visual performance.

To clean the lens you must use isopropyl alcohol and rub frequently, repeating alcohol application often.

Paying a price of $238.00-$300.00 in US currency makes this product a very poor choice for anyone!
