For A gift It's not too bad. Sure there are better (and more expensive) cameras out there. The Kodak DC3200 is one of those mixes between quality and price. At 1 Megapixel it takes OK pictures given the right lighting conditions.
So why the three star rating? Think about it. A digital camera for less than $200? Don't expect top of the line.
PROS: Comes with everything you need to start taking pictures. Including: 2 MB of internal memory, 4 AA batteries, computer software, serial cable, and a quick start manual. On best quality setting it takes beautiful pictures if the light is just right. It has a 1.6 inch LCD screen. It's tiny but OK. navagating through the menus on the camera is easy enough It has a 2x digital zoom.
CONS: Flash is too bright! It can be turned off but then pics come out too dark! Unless the lighting is exactly right you will either get a picture that is too dark or a picture thats so bright it's mostly white! Serial connection is slow. Uploading one "best" quality pic to the computer took almost three minutes! The internal memory is limited to a crappy 2 MB. (It does accept compact flash cards though) When you take a picture the camera pauses for a second before taking it. If youre trying to capture something moving fast chances are it will be gone by the time the shutter goes off! Only saves pics as JPEG's.
OK thats all the pros and cons I can think of right now.
MY EXPERIANCE WITH THE KODAK DC3200
About 30% of the pics I took turned out to have problems. They were either too light or too dark. The color was always good it was just the brightness. I have Adobe Photoshop on my PC so I can fix too light or too dark pics to a certain point. Detail in the pictures is good even on lowest quality setting. The software that is used for uploading the pics is very plain and bare. (At leasyt it doesn't crash!) The software will try connecting to the camera and if a connection is made then thumbnails of the pics you took will come up on screen. Double click a thumbnail to save the Picture to the Hard drive. Saving is slow. Be prepaired to wait, it's gonna be awhile...
All in all despite it's flaws It's a good camera for the price.
