Pros: Swivel screen, great macro mode, good photo quality, interval mode, manual focus, document duplicator.
Cons: Difficult controls, slow autofocus, no aperture control, very limited shutter time control.
The Bottom Line: A great camera when photographing still life, documents, macros, timed image sequences, anything that can be composed, but not a good choice for spontaneous or action photography.

| gustep's Full Review: Ricoh RDC-7 Digital Camera |
This was my first high-quality digicam, and it has definitely proven its worth over the time. I think I have no other camera that has been used as extensively, simply because I am now upgrading cameras much faster. Image quality is good, focus is slow, but I still use this camera for several purposes:
1.) Excellent macro mode. This is the camera out of my 5 digital ones that gives me the best macros. You can hold the lens 1/2 inch (1cm) close to the subject and get great photos. So whenever I photograph insects, microchips, or anything that's tough to see with the bare eye, this camera is it.
2.) Nice interval mode - set it up, and it takes one photograph every 30 seconds or longer, until the card is full. So flip the screen forwards, set up interval mode, and you can make all the faces you've ever wanted to try out in front of the camera, all while seeing yourself in its screen.
3.) Handy and very small document mode - I don't know how they do it, but if you take 1-bit B&W photos of printed matter, each photograph is only around 25kB large (0.025MB), and that at the full 3 megapixels. This means that you can photograph hundreds of pages and later print them out with good quality - i.e., use this camera & a laser printer as a photocopier. I often used it for exactly this purpose.
Also, this camera allows you to manually focus in many fine steps, which is a definite plus, for example with the interval mode - set manual focus once, and it'll be right on for the rest of the shooting session.
Update in March 2006:
I still have and use this camera. I especially like the pivot/svivel display and the fact that you can set it up to take one full quality picture every 30 seconds - this is so much better than the 10 second countdown timer on most cameras because a.) if you join the group in the picture you can see yourself in the screen and b.) you all can just stay put for another few pictures - no more running back and forth!
