sailingshot's Full Review: Nikon AF Nikkor 105mm f/2.8D Lens
You will not be unhappy with this very fine Nikon lens. It's a great macro lens that is very sharp. Handling is excellent, perhaps the very BEST of all the 90 to 105 macro range lenses. It does 1:1 no problem, though your distance to the subject is quite close. If you plan to shoot ant faces (not AUNT faces!), you might be better served by a longer lens such as a 180mm that will create more working distance. Still, working carefully, the Nikon 105 is quite capable of some astounding shots.
However, the 105 falls a bit short in normal photography. The reason for this is rather ugly bokeh....the quality of out of focus areas in the frame. Some also question the high sharpness of macro lenses when shooting people, feeling that there's too much detail. I don't agree, but to each his own.
Tamron, like Sigma and Tokina has their own macro's in the same range. And they have simply raised the bar. The Tamron 90mm 2.8 DI is even SHARPER than the Nikon 105. But it's even more superior when shooting portraits where it's beautiful Bokeh has an enviable reputation.
Bottom line: The Nikon Micro 105mm is very good, but it's second best to the Tamron 90 in a rare case of 3rd party optics getting it almost all right. You won't go wrong with either and the Nikon is better built, which carries weight with those who are rough on their gear. Believe it or not, some people are! Others may translate the Nikon's heavier build to better handling off the tripod. Good luck.
