| dandagger's Full Review: Canon Elura 2 Mini DV Camcorder |
I just purchased the Elura 2 MC and is it tiny!
This is my first video recorder so take my comments as coming from a beginner. While I have been wanting one for a long time, I used an upcoming trip to Italy as my excuse to purchase the camcorder. I am an architect and recording visits to important buildings and cities and sharing them with my colleagues is something I like to do. I have always used slides to do the job, but lately I've been wanting to move to a digital format. Though I've been interested in the digital camera format, the only one I've liked is the ultra small Canon S100, and it presented a few compromises I wasn't ready to accept.
The digital video medium caught my interest because I think it presents a more exciting presentation and a more flexible format compared to still photography.
I have researched about 15 DV recorders looking for the most compact and up-to-date features when I read about the upcoming Elura 2 MC. It sounded just like what I wanted but it wasn't suppose to be available till sometime in September. I was surprised when I saw it advertised in PC Mall and MPSuperstore recently. I've purchased it and have enjoyed getting to know it for the past 24 hours.
Its size is about that of an overstuffed wallet (which is what you'll need in order to pay for it!) and it weighs a mere 13 ounces. It is small enough to fit into my pants pocket!
My first experience has been wild! The degree of miniturization is mind-blowing but it doesn't get in the way of being useable. The small size and lightness of the camera is not tiring in the least. It fits in your hand like a glove and the placement of the key buttons and switches are in all the right places.
For point and shoot video it is as easy as it comes. Its day time performance in automatic mode is very acceptable while its low light recording is marginal. I'm still trying to understand how it's manual system works.
The still camera is easy to operate and review, but at 1 million pixels, its not great quality photography. It does allow you to photograph directly to either video film or to a multi-media card.
The zoom is fine, but sensitive, and I'm trying to master zooming slowly. I also find it difficult to turn the record button off without shaking the camera. So far, this is all I have found to be critical.
I am enthusiastic about the Elura 2 MC. I just hope I figure out how to use all its features and functions before my trip.
