Does this also apply to 605U, namely can play CD-R and MP3 and replace the decoder chip. Do you have any info on where to get this chip and how to replace?

Hitachi DVP505E ROCKS !! (Reply to this comment)
by Nigz
I bought one of these last week after my Hitachi DVP305E developed a faulty laser unit. I have not had any hesitation or problems with this machine. Plays everything I throw at it (including MP3). The firmware is upgradeable so I have managed to find a replacement bios to make it multi-region.

I have heard that the problems experienced by some 505's is down to the ESS decoder chip. But it seems to effect some, and not others.

Yes you are right, it just slipped my mind why I did not add them.

I made some changes, Thanks for the comment.

Does this have the 6 Dolby-Digital analog... (Reply to this comment)
by radioguy
... line outputs? Also, does it have DD optical or DD (or DTS) coaxial connections? People who have A/V receivers with one, but not the other, of these type of DD connections need to know this, because if they get a DVD player that doesn't have their type of connection they won't be able to connect it to the receiver (except via regular analog L/R inputs).

I tend to check out the one star reviews because they are harder to write than the good reviews. I think you have done an excellent job at providing us with information so that we can make our own opinions. Excellent review.
