| utbigrod's Full Review: Onkyo DV-S535 DVD Player |
Let me start out by saying that I love Onkyo and I always support their products. I purchased the 595 receiver earlier this year and I am in love with it. My father had the 575 and it was great and the 595 just picks up where it left off. So naturally I wanted a Onkyo DVD to go with it. I got the 535 of of Ubid at a great price refurbished. The video playback is impecable and I haven't even hooked it up using the component cables yet. Right now I am just running it s-video to a 24" flat screen, so I don't expect much return with component cables due to the small display. I used to own a Apex 600A and the 535 completely annihilates the Apex in video playback. I turned on my HEAT DVD to do a comparison. The Apex had a huge problem with artifacts especially in black scenes. When the intro credits started to role and it is just white lettering on a black screen.....AMAZING. Not one artifact to be seen. The black was rich and the white lettering was crisp against it. This is a testament to the product in itself, you don't need any fancy tests; just a black screen and white writing!
The Onkyo although does have some things that I just can't stand. The loud motor is not one of them though. It is much louder than any other DVD player I have owned or used, but it doesn't matter because the sound should always drowned it out from the audio. The two things that kill me are the chinsy remote and the CDR playback capability. The remote sucks, I don't care what anyone says about getting used to it or whatever....it sucks! I've seen better remotes on a $99 Philips CD player. I use the 595's remote anyway and program the functions there, but I think Onkyo dropped the ball on this one. The next thing is CDR playback. It says it plays CDR's and CDRW's. NOT! I have yet to find ONE single CDR that it will playback. I have tried many brands (i.e. Memorex, Verbatim, Sony, PNY, CompUSA, etc.) and many recording modes (i.e. TAO, DAO, diret image, etc.) NOTHING! That really burns me up because I like to make mixes of my CD's that I own and I can't play them back on the 535. It wouldn't be so bad if it were a 5-disc changer but oh well.
So overall this is a GREAT DVD player....a not so great audio player as far as options go. Although, I must say the audio playback of my regular CD's is wonderful.
