Must say I enjoyed this player more than I expected. In theory, the tiny 7" screen is more suitable for use during travel, but I find that I will use it sometimes at home instead of the other players when I'm watching anamorphic material just because it is neat and won't bother anyone else.
VIDEO:
------
It's on par with any other dvd player, and on the LCD display the picture is surprisingly crisp. This is probably it's slickest feature, whenever I watch a movie on an airplane, I feel like a movie character. "This disc will self destruct in exactly 10 seconds... 10... 9..."
AUDIO:
------
The audio as expected with any small device sounds tinny, but this can easily be resolved by using headphones.
The inclusion of the DTS decoded is GREAT, now you can use this unit to listen to DTS CDs thru the headphones, although thru headphones you won't get true 5.1 sound. However, you do get sweeping music.
I tried it with the video system in my parents' Van and it plays flawlessly even when we hit big potholes.
EASE OF USE:
------------
The only pain is with the onboard controls. 2 dual-function buttons - one for rewind/previous scene, and one foreward/next scene. To change a scene, press button once. To rew or fwd, press-and-hold. Many times I've done a press/hold to (eg) rew, then intended to do same again for a faster rewind, but accidentally just pressed it and found myself at the start of the scene again. Otherwise, I haven't found any other problem.
Also, the dvd compartement door is a bit flimsy.
WHERE IT CAN IMPROVE:
---------------------
The only four things an improved version can include that I can think of are :
1. Support of MP3 CDrom playback. This would have been an ideal feature to have.
2. Playback of non anamorphic 16:9 material allows changing monitor mode to scale it full screen, but there is NO vertical filtering/interpolation that makes the image pixelated. This effect is so unpleasant that I stopped watching non-anamorphic materials ont this unit.
3. The battery pack is HUGE which destroys the advantage of the tiny thin main unit. (Note that the battery for the Pioneer 7" is twice as thick)
4. What gives? This player gets very hot when placed on one's lap. You need to put it on a pillow if you want to watch it in bed. But many desktop units play even hotter, so this is standard for dvd players.
But overall, I like this unit. Definitely a fun toy to use when travelling. My parents are seriously considering getting a 2nd unit as a permanent addition to the Van's audio-video system.
