| mixer107's Full Review: Panasonic DVD-RV30 DVD Player |
The Panasonic DVD-RV30 is my first DVD player. I was using my computer to watch DVDs before I got this player. What a difference. No more having to watch movies at my desk; I can enjoy them sitting comfortably on my couch. Now I can watch DVDs as they are intended to be watched. There are a great amount of options on this player that enhance your movie experience.
The video quality is great. The picture shows up bright and clean. If the picture is too dark, there is an option to lighten it up. It has S-video out as well as component video out. There is no coaxial output for those of you with real old television sets. There are five speeds of fast forwarding, with the slowest forward offering sound while the process takes place. Fast-forwarding at the fastest speed is almost useless because you cannot tell what part of the movie you are in. There is also a cinema option on the player that enhances detail in dark scenes.
The sound quality is also good. It has the standard audio out, subwoofer output, and an optical output as well. There is also a 2 level VSS option that creates surround sound effects on a two-speaker system. Another interesting option enhances the dialogue on the disks that have sounds effects that drown out voices.
The instruction booklet was also pretty informative. I know most people don’t even read these things, but this one had some useful information for those who are not home theater experts. There is a great chart in the booklet that shows how different screen aspects (4:3 or 16:9) would look against different types of software formats (wide-screen, pan and scan, letter box, or regular.) There is also a setup chart to show you how to hook up the right audio system.
I am not too picky on remote controls; This remote was fine for me. The remote is smaller than the average remote and the buttons are laid out clearly. Most of the navigation through the dvd menus will be by using the arrow and enter buttons which are easy to find.
This player can also read CDs and VCDs. The CD player mode is adequete but it will probably not be used very much as a music player. VCDs also play well on the unit for those with discs in that format. So far, I have not had any problems trying to play VCDs.
Overall, I would recommend this player to anyone looking to buy his or her first DVD player. This is a great entry/mid level player. I got this player for $200, but it is probably cheaper now. Whatever the cost, this unit is a great player loaded with options.
