| michael_tremko's Full Review: Pioneer DV-333 DVD Player |
This is the second Pioneer piece of equipment I've owned. The first was a receiver I got for Christmas in like '85 or so. It did the job, was pretty cheap, and it worked well. It ran for FOREVER, and I ended up passing it on to someone else because I bought a "better" Denon integrated amp. The Denon was kind of unreliable though, and it ended up in the shop a couple of times. The Pioneer stayed on through thick and thin for about ten years before I passed it on.
I expect this to be the same kind of experience. It's easy to use, it works fine, and I have no complaints. It's even got some extra features I didn't know about for a while. It plays VCD's, burned CD's, rewritable CD's, DVD's, everything. It'll play just about anything. I finally got a CD burner working correctly so this is one of the really cool things about it and I get lots of use out of it.
It's got the basic functionality I require. It plays DVD's and CD's. What else do you want? There are tons of other players out there that have a hundred fuctions, but I just tend to pop in a disc and play it from beginning to end. I can choose 4:3 or 16:9, or a 4:3 widescreen.
I've noticed that a great way to get some extra performance out of the picture is to replace the standard video cable that comes with the unit with a nice video cable available at best buy or the good guys or whatever else is local to you. It's about another $50 or so, but the picture quality improvement is very enjoyable to me. I quite like it.
Back to the DVD player itself. The remote does everything I want. Mostly, I just want to pop in a movie and let it ride to the end. If I want to skip forward or back a couple chapters then I can do that. It's a very lightweight unit, almost so light that it seems like the box is almost empty. The bottom line is that I don't care how much it weighs once I put a movie in and hit play.
The picture quality is great, the sound is just as good as my NAD 523 CD player. I can't think of a good reason to go with a different unit.
I've seen it said in other reviews that this player suffers from tray noise, and I've heard it on this one. But, that only happens when the movie's totally quiet. Most of the movies I watch don't have that happen too often. I'm sure not bothered by it. Hell, I hear cars pass by my window once in a while too, or I hear a door shut in the hallway of my apartment building, or one of my neighbors knocks on the door. I'm not worried by that little tiny insignificance.
