| ebb378's Full Review: Sony DVP-S360D DVD Player |
After spending a year accumulating DVDs to watch on my computer while flying cross-country, I decided that the time had come to actually procure a DVD player for my home. So what made me buy Sony when I bought this DVD player? Honestly, it was the price and brand name recognition that swayed me, but boy am I glad it did!
I went to Best Buy while they were having a deal, and I knew I was going to buy a DVD player. The question was which one was it going to be. Since the salesmen there are not on commission, I felt that it was safe to ask their opinions on which was the best of the cheapies (I'm a grad-student--I'm not spending $500 on this thing!) The first choice, they said, was a Panasonic (because it plays MP3s--I'm not hooking this up to my stereo--I don't need an MP3 player in it), but they were sold out of that one, so they recommended this--the Sony DVP-S360. Let me tell you, it's a beaut!
Hooking this thing up was absolutely simple--not a big reason to buy this unit, per se, as all DVD players will probably be this easy to hook up, but the picture and sound quality are phenominal! Granted, it's only connected to a television, not a stereo, but it is connected to a Sony Wega television with stereo sound, so I think it's quite decent enough.
Also, if you have a Sony TV, I would definitely recommend this unit because the remote control incorporates three controls for Sony televisions: power, input, and volume. Basically, if you're going to watch a DVD, you do not need another remote control--this one will turn on your TV set, allow you change the input to the DVD setting, and adjust the volume accordingly!
As far as features on the DVD player itself, if you hit the stop button at any point during the DVD, rather than take you to the beginning, this machine "remembers" where you were indefinitely. My parents have the Panasonic the guys at Best Buy recommended, and it only seems to "remember" for 15 minutes or so. There have been times when I've gone to bed and finished the movie I'm watching the next day with my Sony.
As far as negatives are concerned, I have two: 1) it's a bit pricey--were it not for the sale Best Buy had and the mail-in rebate Sony offered (at that time), I don't think I'd have been able to afford this player, and 2) the remote--it's vey difficult to see in the dark and has no channel controls for the TV so that it doesn't replace the TV remote.
All in all, I would say this is a very formidable DVD player that packs a whole lot of quality into a relatively moderate price.
Also, just so you know, I'm giving it 4s on Sound and picture quality only because I don't have it hooked up to a stereo or an HDTV so I don't know if it merits a 5, but at the very least, it deserves a 4.
