| DrainOWHAT's Full Review: Sony DVP-S360D DVD Player |
The Sony DVP-S360 is definitely an excellent product. I am not going to claim to know a lot about the world of DVD players, because I don't, but what I do know is that the $235 I paid for this item was well worth it.
First I will run through some of the basic functions that most DVD players have, and if you find one that doesn't, don't buy it.
1. The ability to jump to different "chapters" of any movie. Each movie is broken down into about 25-35 scenes or chapters and you can skip to anyone you want at any point in time.
2. The ability to play music CDs as well as DVDs of course
3. Dolby Digital surround sound. To be perfectly honest with you, if you want good quality sound, you definitely need dolby surround in your DVD player, it makes a huge difference.
OK, now onto some of the specifics of this particular player...
The quality of the picture is superb. It comes in crystal clear and its next to impossible to see any of those little annoying "pixels" that make the movie look like a 6000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Instead it is one smooth flowing scene, as if you were watching the events as they unfold through a window.
The sound is also excellent. In my case, I hooked up my stereo speakers to my TV set, so I have the 2 speakers from the TV and the 5 speakers from the stereo going all at once. If you have the option of doing this i HIGHLY recommend it. The sound I get is fantastic. The surround sound options are awesome because they really give the room a movie theater like atmosphere.
One of the bonus options I tend to enjoy is the slow motion function. First of all, you know how when you pause a VHS it looks all fuzzy and you get those annoying black and white lines going across the screen? Yeah, kiss those goodbye when you buy this DVD player. The pause screen is so clear, it is like looking at a photograph. Furthermore, you can then watch the movie in 2 different slow motion speeds, or advance the movie one frame at a time by pressing a button for each frame. I believe there are 16 frames for each second of the movie, but I could be wrong so don't bet the farm on it.
Some other awesome features are...
- the ability to change angles for certain scenes. For example, if a train is passing, you can watch the train from the front, from the left side, right sight, rear, or birdseye view.
- using a password to bock certain discs. sorry kiddies, but this is just what the parents are looking for so I have to put it in this review
-setting a movie to play only certain "chapters" in any particular order you wish
Overall, if you don't have boatloads of money to be spending on a DVD player, but still want a taste of the luxury ( like myself ) this is an excellent player for you. It is affordable and will give you the sound and picture quality you are searching for.
