Pros: Excellent sound and general build quality. Good software and programmability.
Cons: the buttons are hard to read/operate and the drawer is flimsy.
The Bottom Line: This unit is commonly available at deep discounts. It is a superior CD player and good for SACD and video too. Great sound on a budget!

| bimotarich's Full Review: Sony DVP-S9000 ES DVD Player |
I bought this player used for $300 after reading many positive reviews about its sound quality. I already have a satisfactory DVD-A player (Denon 3300) but was a little disappointed in its CD performance (a little cold, slightly harsh but really quite good compared to most any other DVD player for CD play back). I was not disappointed. Its sounds warmer than the Denon and seems more relaxed. I am very impressed. I have three complaints about the player... as an SACD player it only works with 2 channel programs (no multi channel outputs). This is tolerable as most recordings were made with only 2 channel stereo in mind. another minor complaint is the drawer, which seems flimsy, moves slowly, and just looks cheap. The CDs barely seem to fit in it and it looks very delicate... not what I expected from a 1000 dollar player. The last and most bothersome aspect is the control button design. The play looks gorgeous but the buttons are tiny and VERY hard to read. You have the player at eye level and the lighting must be good to read and when you push them they dont move so it is hard to tell if you have engauged them. But once it is playing all those concerns drop away! The video quality seems quite adequate but as I rarely use my TV and it is a crappy 32 inch Toshiba so I can`t comment further on video quality but others report that it is excellent..
