Folks, let me give you some good news. The Sony DVPS9000ES has arrived!! It is categorically a world changing player and not only for video but also music. I am bleary eyed as I write this as I have hardly been able to sleep since the MUSIC and the VIDEO have now arrived in my house. Staying up way past my bedtime for days on end will do that to a person.
The DVPS9000ES represents the state of the art in music playback and video. Period and end of story. First music, (I AM NOT A SONY EMPLOYEE!!): the music is sweet, deep, detailed and musical. If you have not heard the Sony Super Audio CDs, then you have not heard what digital music is all about. I believe that Robert Harley from Stereophile said that SACD is better than 30ips master tape!!! And I couldn't agree more. Check out the Herbie Hancock "Headhunters" album, the bass is DEEEP and Solid, the individuals instruments are uncannily THERE, and the overall soundstage is enormous. But this does not only apply to SACDs, it also applies to regular CDs, as this is a great standard player. I was blown away last night when I took my Mobile Fidelity CD of Bob Marley's "Catch a Fire" album. This player is so good it is SICK!! The individual instruments were unbelievable, and the cymbals, for example, sounded like they were two feet above my head!! The bass was so tight, it just grabbed me and would not let go. I would pay 1500 for the player just to get this music from this one CD alone!
Okay, that last comment was a little silly, but not too far off the mark, it IS beyond me why Sony is only selling this for this price, they could command twice its price.
As far as video is concerned, the player gives you as close to film as you can get and is the only player in the country that has true progressive scan the way they do it. The player comes with Men in Black as a demo, and you will be floored from the opening scene on the resolution, clarity and sound. Movie theaters are not going to be happy with Sony for creating this player, it is that good.
Bottom line? BUY THIS PLAYER. The music end of it justifies it alone, but the video is worth twice the price. The build quality of this machine is near perfect (although Sony PLEASE give us the option of just letting the blue square shine without the front panel display- I want my magic blue cube to shine by itself at times!), it is heavy (27 lbs or so), and has a sweet brushed aluminum tray that comes out to receive disks. The menus are easy to operate and the remote is a thing of beauty (easy to use in the dark and very ergonomic). In sum, I am thrilled with my system and now no longer need to participate in the once endless search for perfect components. I got 'em, and they are in my house, thanks to Sony.
If you can't tell it by now, I'll say it, I love this machine and would recommend it to anyone... it makes the world a better place.
A parting comment or two:
I have now had the DVP9000 ES for a week, and there are two things that must be said. First, often when purchasing a product, the initial excitement is later replaced for some reason or another, with buyer remorse. This is NOT the case with the DVPS9000 ES. Not at all, in fact with every day that I have used it, some new musical nuance, or some video highlight seems to appear, reinvigorating my excitement about this player. Example: Last night I sat down to listen to the SACD with John McLaughlin, DiMeola, and Delucia. This is an UNREAL SACD. I sat there astonished with the immense amount of overtones that come out of this player, the reverberations of the individual guitar strings against the guitar's body, the ability to tell whether the guitarist was using a pick or only fingers, etc. On top of which, the MOMENT, the event itself, came shining through. It makes you feel as if you are part of the audience at a live event. This type of involvement is what audiophiles seek, and it comes through with this Sony player.
Finally, a warning: This player will cause one problem, it will cause you to lose sleep. If you love music, it will absolutely keep you up at night when you know you should be in bed. I have been exhausted due to a busy schedule, but I have been unable to break the hold of this player. As I listened to the SACD of McLaughlin, DiMeola, and Delucia last night, I kept thinking "I need to get some sleep!", but couldn't break away. Mark my words, if you buy this player, you will understand. This is not hyperbole, this is my dilemma. So to all the sleep deprived, you have been forewarned!
A final comment, after writing this review I came across a nice review that is worth reading. I agree with the author, for $1500, this is the best player on the market! Here you go: http://www.dvd.com/stories/learn/why_dvd/story_2311.asp
