Is it possible? A good quality DVD player for $90 (now ~$110)? Yes. I have been looking for DVD players for Christmas 2000, and decided on the Toshiba SD1600. All of the review I have read (at Epinions and elsewhere) have been excellent, and the price is within my range. I then set about finding the most cost-effective way of purchasing the SD1600, and to my surprise and elation, I've outdone myself (with a bit of help from various internet sites). Now I can even afford some DVDs as stocking stuffers.
First, 800.com has the Toshiba SD1600 on sale for $200 (MSRP is $280). They also have a limited-time DVD player discount of 10% with free shipping (UPS standard). They are also offering a discount of $30 off $150 purchase coupon (SEE UPDATE BELOW).
Here's how:
follow this link for 800.com coupon in your shopping basket:
http://www.800.com/coupon.asp?CouponID=893
UPDATE: apparently this coupon link has shrunk to $10 off.
Now, re-enter 800.com through Ebates.com (5% rebate on 800.com purchases made through ebates):
http://www.ebates.com/
Next, use MicroSoft Passport wallet to make purchase and get an additional 20% off purchase at 800.com.
MS passport:

In addition, Toshiba/Pepsi are offering a rebate with DVD player purchase and Pepsi case purchase.

So, to summarize:
$279 MSRB Toshiba SD1600
$199.94 at 800.com
-$40 (20% off for Microsoft Passport users)
-$20 (10% off on DVD players at 800.com)
-$10 ($30 (now $10) off $150 purchase at 800.com) - SEE UPDATE ABOVE
$129.96 with free shipping.
Enter 800.com through Ebates.com (register @ Ebates) and get an additional 5% (~$5) refunded to you through Ebates.
And finally, submit a $15 mail-in rebate on the SD1600 from Toshiba and Pepsi.
That's ~$20 in rebates from this purchase.
Bottom line: An excellent low-mid range DVD player for a bit over $100. Even if one or more of these deals expire, it is still an excellent DVD player for a good price.
I will write an Epinion on the SD1600 itself after I have had a chance to use it for a while, so check back.
NOTE: The info listed above was current as of November 21, 2000, and should be available for the holiday shopping season.
I will remove this epinion when the deals expire.
