| kcagle's Full Review: Sony RM-VL900 Remote Control |
I started my quest for a functional universal remote last month when I upgraded my home theater system.
I already owned a one-for-all remote that can supposedly control 7 devices. It worked great until I bought new electronics and it would not recognize my DVD(JVC) or receiver(Pioneer). I did a lot of shopping on the web and decided to try the RCA RCU800(I think that's the model).
I absolutely refuse to spend more than about $60 on a remote. The RCA was nice and brightly backlit, but the memory on it for learning is pitiful(~20 keys) and it would not program ANY of the keys from my receiver remote.
I went to Bestbuy and they had the next model above my One-for-all. It is backlit and has some learning ability on only certain keys. I walked over to the shelf where my Pioneer receiver was for sale and tried to program the remote to use it. No luck.
So, here I am at my current juncture. I purchased the sony remote and it works with ALL my components (Samsung HDTV, Sony VCR, JVC DVD, JVC CD, Hughes Satelite, and Pioneer receiver) I was able to customize EVERY key that did not match the preprogrammed commands for my components. This was very useful.
The layout is simple and has everything you need. You can program up to 3 macros into it and even put the macros on a delay, which I have not tried yet.
The only drawback is that it is not backlit, though it does glow in the dark.
I have only ONE remote again. What joy!
