Pros: A well-designed piece of equipment that does exactly what it's supposed to.
Cons: Could use more macro buttons. The manual is sometimes confusing.
The Bottom Line: A great way to get rid of remote control clutter.

| hansbos's Full Review: Sony RM-VL900 Remote Control |
Yesterday I got my VL900 remote and it totally met my expectations. It worked with my Sony DVD and amplifier right out of the box and was easy to set up with my Samsung TV (just type in a code number). The cable box was a little more work (none of the supplied code numbers worked), but it took only a few minutes to have the new remote learn everything it needed from its cable box cousin. So within half an hour I could do everything with this one remote that I needed four remotes for before.
The more challenging part (but also more fun) was to set up the macro keys. These keys allow you to turn on the cable, TV, and amplifier, select your favorite channel, and switch the amplifier to TV sound with one touch of a button. You need to be a little organized to get this right and you certainly need the manual, which is not always that clear. I had to reread several sections two or three times to get it, but in the end I got it to work and it's really quite nice.
The thing is also pretty flexible, which is great. (Too many gadgets either work or they don't, which can be very frustrating). For example, I ran into a problem with switching the amplifier to TV sound within one of these macros (it worked when I pressed the buttons myself, but wouldn't do it automatically), but I re-taught the remote that command and then included it in the macro and then it worked fine.
Be sure to get a good price for this thing though. I got mine for about $35 at Etronics.com, but saw it for sale at $60 at some other stores!
