| darthtyranus's Full Review: Sony RM-VL900 Remote Control |
This is the second Sony learning remote I have owned. I had the big touchscreen Sony 2100, but it was too big for constant use. This remote takes care of that problem and the loss of a screen only hurts for programing macro functions.
Pros: This remote is very simple to use. The button layout makes sense and is easy to memorize so you won't have to turn a light on during a movie. Plus, if a component you have does not work with the remote, it can learn to buttons off of the original remote. Let me explain. You want the remote to learn to control your VCR, but none of the supplied codes work. You place the two remotes a couple of inches away from each other and push the button you want to learn on the new remote and push the same button on the old remote and Wallah! it has learned the command. I programmed my cable box functions(all of them) into my remote in about three minutes. The only problem you might run into is when you program the "pause" button to be the next disc button on your carousel cd player. You might forget which button you programmed it to. But after a few uses it is pretty easy to remember. It can control up to eight components at once. The remote also does not weigh very much. My old 2100 remote weighed about a pound. This remote is considerably lighter. It also has glow in the dark buttons which last for 2-5 hours. It really depends how long the remote was in the light in the first place.
Cons: Now for the Macro functions! Macro functions are for programming one button to send a series of commands to your components in one press. The remote has three primary macro buttons, but can have an additional eight. But these are harder to use as the macro function on these buttons is a secondary function. This is a little hard to do at first! A screen would have made this quite easier as you could see the correct order you have already imputed. It is too hard of a learning curve at first. the manual does an o.k. job at explaining things, but could have been worded better.
Overall this is a great remote for controlling many components at once. It has many great features that outweigh the smaller problems.
