| madarnell's Full Review: General Electric VG4270 VHS VCR |
I remember when my dad bought our first family VCR. It was big & heavy & hard to figure out how to program. I think the clock flashed 12:00 for 10 years. This was in the early 80’s when it was considered the new hot thing. If I remember right it cost about $800.00 on sale at Sears. Boy has the times & technology changed.
Recently I just purchased a new VCR to replace our older one. After checking different sales fliers & manufactures web sites, I ended up going to “Wal-Mart”. They seemed to have the best prices for what I was looking for.
I checked several manufacturers & models. I had a spending limit of $120.00 dollars. So I ended up settling on a 4- head VCR made by General Electric, (GE). My requirements we’re it had to be a stereo VCR & cost around $100.00. So finding this one priced at $78.00 dollars seemed like a good deal to me.
The Spec.’s
It is a GE VG4270 4-head, stereo VCR. It also has stereo & video inputs on the front. This is extremely helpful when wanting to hook up another VCR to tape tapes or a video game system like Sony Play station or Nintendo 64 type games. It’s small in size & silver. The remote is relatively small, compare to other remotes.

SET UP
It really amazes me how much better these machines play & record now day’s. Even compared to the units of five years ago. This VCR is easy to set up with big on screen help modes. Basically just plug it in hit menu, do a channel scan & that’s about it. If you have cable or DSS like I do you’ll need to select the right input. Other than the few basics this machine will walk you through an easy set up. I don’t think I’ve had to look at the manual yet!
PERFORMANCE
This VCR plays already recorded tapes great. Like movies from “Block Buster” or the like. The picture is clear & the tracking is automatic. There is an adjustment button for the tracking if it’s needed but when you insert a tape is auto adjusts. I think only a couple of times I’ve actually had to manually adjust the tracking. I’m pretty sure that was for a older tape that I had recorded. The audio sounds clear & normal. The unit records very well on both SP and SLP mode. In-fact it records so well on SLP mode that with a good “clean” tape it is hard to tell the difference between the two. As far as the audio is concerned...........you really can’t tell any difference between SP mode & SLP mode. This is way cool for people like me who do a lot of recording of music video shows & music concerts. I can record on SLP mode & get twice the programming recorded & it looks good & sounds great.
The remote is easy to use and laid out nicely. Just the basic features not too many buttons to get a hung up on. I also like how fast this thing can fast forward & re-wind tapes. But the down side is it's kind of noisy while doing this.
In closing I feel for $80.00 this is one heck of a VCR! It plays great, it sounds great & it’s easy to use. But the main thing is it’s cheap! ($$$)
For $80.00 you can afford to get two.
Thanks
