Full marks to Sony for attempting to break into the lower reaches of the VCR market. Although renowned for it's high-end products, it's taken the plunge and released the KS-1 at around $140, putting it into the price range of parents who need a second video.
And why not? With an increasing amount of children having TV's and VCR's in their bedrooms, Sony have moved into this potential market with as product that wouldn't look out of place on Sesame Street.
With just a glance at the box, you can tell this is a VCR designed to the used by kids - big bright buttons, and colored panels, plus it's all easy to use. But is it so kidlike? I found the machine quite attractive after a while - it's different, which is more than I can say for a couple of other VCR's out there.
Disappointingly, this isn't one machine that is loaded down with features, although you probably will have guessed that much from the start. It's all very basic - you've got your twin speed play, auto set-up, an on-screen display, timer settings, one touch record - in essence, nothing ground-breaking.
But, as I said earlier, it's a superb machine for kids. The lack of features make this machine even easier to use, and I'd be pretty confident about a child using this and not breaking it. So, I'd definitely recommend this machine. If you're on a budget, it's great - and who knows it may even fit into you color schemes!
