With some oversimplification, there seem to be two basic types of universal remotes:
- lower end ($20-80) "preprogrammed" remotes where you type in codes for your equipment and get a subset of commands that the manufacturer thought was most useful, on fixed buttons that may or may not be labeled in a way that makes sense.
and
- high end ($200->) ultraprogammable "touch screen" remotes, where you can design your own interface, picking which functions are important to you, and laying them out on the touch screen in the way that makes the most sense to you.
At $140 MSRP the SL-9000 strikes a very nice balance between these two extremes. It has an extensive, high quality library of preprogrammed codes, with many more buttons than typical low-end remotes so that you get more functions defined. In my case, the preprogramming included functions not available on the original remote for my Pioneer VSX-D608 receiver (including direct access to each input source, a pet peeve of many VSX-D608 reviewers here on epinions).
In addition to the preprogrammed codes, almost all the SL-9000 buttons can be reprogrammed by learning additional functions from your original remotes. I used this to add a few extra things and change the button layout for my DVD player.
While not as customizable as a touch screen remote, there's something to be said for having real buttons that you can find by touch, without having to look down at a screen to find each function. The SL-9000 has excellent electroluminescent backlighting for when you *do* need to look down for an obscure function.
I'm extremely happy with the SL-9000, and can recommend it highly.
