epinionmonkey's Full Review: Etymotic Research MicroProâ„¢ ER-4P Consumer Headp...
I purchased a set of these headphones to use with my iPod. Just amazing... Every time I plug these in my ears, I'm blown away. I read a few reviews complaining about the lack of bass. Here is the answer to those complaints in a nutshell... "With these headphones, you are only limited by the quality of the recording." I have some really bad music loaded up and I have some amazing clear, crisp recordings as well. First, don't let the so-so recordings bum you out on the headphones. I have Yo-Yo Ma's Unaccompanied and you can literally hear him breathing while he is playing. I never heard it before these headphones. Also, Yannis In My Time album, you can hear him pressing and releasing the foot pedal on the piano. Yea, hearing the pedal is annoying, but that is just how crisp the sound is. Now, about the bass... If it's a recording with lower bass levels, then it's just not going to be there. If the bass is in the recording... look out! I have a couple of tunes that really show off the bass with these headphones. The Appalachian Journey album has a great deal of stand up bass and cello work. Great recording... Very clean. (Check it out at iTunes.)If you plan to use the Etys with an iPod, I like to move my EQ settings around when I listen. For classical, opera, Bocelli etc, I recommend the classical setting. It seems to really open up the sound. For anything with big solid bass, the loudness setting will enhance it and the headphones will perform! (You'll lose a little on the highs, but you'll fill up the low end.) Don't forget to set them deep for best performance. (I prefer and only use the foamies.)
Here are my Cons:
15 words just wasn't enough space and if you are getting ready to spend big on these, you should know about the following: If you are buying these headphones to use when you walk, I wouldn't recommend them. The Etys close out the sound around you, but you hear every step you take, not to mention your heartbeat. Yea, I know... weird. Not sure why it does, but it does. It's very annoying... You also get a lot of cord noise as well. (Moving the cord, rubbing against your clothes etc.It all comes through the headphones.) Again.. weird, but you'll remember me writing this if you get a pair! Second, the Etys are not flat to the ear. I fell asleep, turned on my side and bent it over while it was set in my ear. Didn't hurt the headphones.. just my ear! You can't place your head against a pillow with these in your ears. (ie: long flights.)
