Hello,
The most important character of K240 is that they are extremely well build. K240 will withstand very tough environments. Also, it is resistant to ill-handling by users. I droped it frequently and yanked at the cables even more. But I am listening to it now as I am writing this. Sennheiser and Grado headphones can't take take as much beating as K240M. (They will disintegrate.)
Overall, the sound is very natural. Mid is very smooth and clean. High is beautiful and not fatiguing like HD570. Bass is controlled and precise. There is no loose sound, no abnormal emphasizing. K240 is in control of the sound.
I have listened to many different types of music and I can tell you that this headphone does not prefer certain types of music like Sennheiser and Grado. Very well suited for monitoring and for those who listen to wide varieties of music. However, those who has specific taste of music, you should look elsewhere for headphones with specific specialization like HD580, K501, Grado, etc.
Note K240 requires a headphone amplifier or any proper headphone output. High impedance of the headphones require larger voltage swing/gain. This is not really a bad point. This allows you to use TUBE headphone amplifiers. Also, the damping factor will be far larger than low impedance headphones, thus you get tighter sound.
In any case, K240 will not offer you the best unless it is driven by very good headphone output which will supply headphones with cleaner and stronger signals. Although this is semi-closed headphones, it has no resonance within EarCups, very unlike Sony headphones.
K240 is very comfy headphones. Although the outlook suggest massive weight, it is very light and well balanced. You will forget you have it on. I can use these for several hours. Note however, if the temperature is hot, the headphones will end up warm and wet due to your sweat. (I live in colder climate so I have no problem.)
Due to the toughness of the headphones, used K240 usually are in good shape. I have obtained mine in such way. Commercially, it cost like 150~200 USD.
I have K240M but I have listened to K240DF. K240DF will cost a little more but it is a little better. If you had the choice between K240M and K240DF, you should go with K240DF.**
** There was a typo here I wrote "you should go with K240M" but I really meant to say "You should go with K240DF."
