Pros: Much clearer and more detailed than any headphone at or below $120.
Cons: Seems to need an amp, headband comfort problems.
The Bottom Line: For the price, you must buy these. Despite my complaints, I would buy these again, and I do not think there were any better options out there for under $150.

| rjespo's Full Review: AKG K 401 Consumer Headphones |
I'm basically writing this review to share two things that I have not read in any other reviews. First of all, the headphones are not comfortable for me. The comfort level around the ears is excellent due to airy, wonderful ear cup pads, but the head band is very annoying.
The 401's have an ingenious automatic adjustment feature that uses a headband that adjusts to your head. It consists of two metal rods that are arched normally like a headphone band, but below them is a horizontal leather strip that makes contact with the top of your head and can move up or down based on the size of your head.
It always seems to press too hard on my scalp and makes my scalp feel sore, almost as if it's pulling on my hair or something. This may only happen for people with shorter hair. I just wish that the leather band was softer and didn't press so hard on the top of my head.
My second point is that the headphones have been described as having great bass, which is probably true, although you will not hear it unless you use a headphone amp. I have to turn the bass all the way up on my computer to hear the amount of bass that I get on my Koss 55's, which are $20 dollar cheapos, albeit with excellent sound. My Grado SR60's get excellent bass out of my computer as well. Thus, if you are a college student and you plan on listening to rap or any pop song with a lot of bass, you will need a headphone amp. These cans seem to have amazing potential ... it's just that I'd be lying if I said there isn't distortion in almost every song I listen to.
For now, I'm going back to my Grados.
