| Todd's Full Review: Beyerdynamic DT-831 Consumer Headphones |
The Beyerdynamic DT 831 is the finest closed headphone on the market. Fine detail, smooth mids and good tight bass define the sound of the 831. You don't get the feeling you're listening to a closed headphone. Still, they are not as open sounding as an open headphone. They lean slightly to the bright side though they are not fatiguing. The bass is tight but not real punchy. They are accurate and deliver good separation of instruments. Vocals are clean and clear. They do not distort at high volumes.
The 831 is comfortable. Velour like ear pads (circumaural) and leather head strap make the headphones easy to wear for long periods of time. They come with a 10 ft. coiled cable (I don't think I'd stretch it the full 10 ft!)terminated to a stereo mini with a 1'4 " adapter supplied. Their 250 ohm impedance makes them a prime candidate for a headphone amp. Portable players will not drive them very well and certainly not to their potential. They are also a bit bulky for portable use.
The closed design offers about 12 dB of isolation from outside noise. If your listening is done in a noisy area these will allow enough isolation for you to kick back and enjoy the music. Very good for most kinds of music. Not recommended for bass heads!
